They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ian Leavers APM, former President of the Queensland Police Union and the Police Federation of Australia.

Ian was a titan of the police union movement, not just in Queensland but nationally. His 15 years of leadership at the QPU, his work as PFA President, and his tireless advocacy for police officers left a lasting legacy that continues to benefit police across Australia.

Our thoughts are with Ian's family, friends, and the entire QPU family during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Ian.

Vale - Passing of Ian Leavers, APM

It is with enormous sadness that the QPU President, Executives and staff members acknowledge the passing of Former QPU President Ian Leavers at his home in Brisbane.

Ian led the Union as CEO & President for 15 years, he was a QPU Life Member but his service to fellow members started many years earlier as a Branch rep and later on the Executive as the Southern Region Representative.

Ian Leavers was a titan of the Union movement in Queensland. He set a path that gave police a voice in public debate and that led to our Union having an important say in issues affecting the safety and security of our community.

The work of Ian Leavers as QPU President and President of the Police Federation of Australia will have a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of police nationally. Ian was recognised internationally for his reform work and industrial initiatives.

Our thoughts are today with Ian’s family, friends and entire police family.

WAPU has been advocating for a fair and equitable outcome for Members following legislative changes that brought police officers under the Minimum Conditions of Employment Act. Surely, eight months of talks and meetings must be enough.

Great to see WA Police hosting their annual Recruitment Day at the Academy yesterday. With recruitment and retention ongoing challenges, it’s encouraging to see strong interest and effort going into attracting new officers across both sworn and unsworn roles.

Recruitment and retention matters, and it was great to see strong interest from the community.

WAPU will keep pushing for more officers and better support for the people who step up to serve.

We applaud the opposition government in hearing the voice of the Union and recognising some of the issues facing our Members. Through ongoing discussions with both sides of politics we trust that action will replace words sooner than later.

While WA celebrates the long weekend, police are out there keeping roads safe, shops secure, and communities calm. Serving shouldn’t mean missing out and being left behind.

Public holidays mean rest, family, and road trips for most. For those who serve and protect, it means missed celebrations, empty seats at the table, and shifts that don’t come with a fair go.

We don’t seek applause, but respect has to run both ways. WA Police get little in return for working on a public holiday.

World Mental Health Day | 10 Oct 2025

Our Members face trauma and pressure every day. Police are often first on scene and last to seek help.

Mental health support matters, especially for those who protect and serve.

We proudly stand with organisations like Blisserie and the PTSD Foundation, who provide vital support for our Members and their families.

Let’s keep breaking stigma, supporting our Members, and making sure help is there when it’s needed.

You are not alone. 💙

💛 Mental Health Week starts today 💛

This week we encourage our Members to take a moment for themselves and check in on those around them. Small acts of care like asking a colleague how they are doing, taking a break, or reaching out for support can make a big difference.

You are not alone. Support is available.

Let’s support our Blue Family across the ditch, and the wider community. Donating blood, plasma, or marrow is a simple act that saves lives. Every contribution makes a difference.

Every day the Police family shows up to serve others – now it’s time to show up for one of them.

A long-serving member’s young son has severe aplastic anaemia. He urgently needs a bone marrow transplant. He’s also neutropenic, so needs blood transfusions every second day. The family, who weren’t a match for bone marrow, are living in isolation while searching for a donor. Without a bone marrow transplant, he will not survive.

How can you help?

1. Donate blood
2. If you're aged 18–39, get tested for bone marrow donation at the same time you donate blood. When you visit your local blood donation clinic, ask to be considered for bone marrow donation using the code "Team Blue". All it means is an extra sample for tissue typing. If you’re a match, you’ll be contacted.

Your blood still saves lives even if you're outside the age range or not ready to donate bone marrow – including this young boy’s.

NOTE: Bone marrow donors are usually aged 18-35, but NZ Police staff can donate up to age 39 due to fitness levels.
If you’ve been pregnant, the upper age limit remains 35. Pregnant donors can also donate umbilical cord stem cells – they’re less likely to be rejected.
Māori and Pacific Island donors are especially needed to increase the chances of a match.

Let’s rally together for this boy and for his family.

Today, we pause to observe National Police Remembrance Day, honouring our Members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Their courage, dedication, and the sacrifices made by them and their families deserve our deepest respect.

Across the state, venues will be lit blue as a tribute to their service and sacrifice.

This day is also a reminder of the challenges our Members face every day and the commitment they show in protecting our communities. As we reflect on those no longer with us, we stand united in support of all our Members and the vital work they do.

WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER.
