Pregnant and feeling stiff? Try this ✨
Elyse, one of our Women’s Health Physios, is demonstrating Thread the Needle - one of our absolute favourite exercises for releasing any tightness in the mid to upper back region. If being on your wrists on all fours is challenging for you, go back to our last video (3 Physio approved pregnancy stretches) where you’ll see a seated rotation stretch that you can do instead.

Pregnant and need a quick stretch? 🤰🏼
Check out these exercises recommended by our Women’s Health Physio Agner, who has picked three quick moves that can be done from the seated position or if you have some floor space. The key thing to remember here is that you want to keep your spine healthy, happy and mobile. By rotating and laterally flexing (side bending) you will avoid creating any stiffness or tension! Make sure to breathe deeply into the back and sides of your ribcage, to create the feeling of space and expansion in your body - you will feel amazing afterwards!

Calling all pregnant mums - give this a try! All you need is a massage or tennis ball 💥
If you’re starting to feel some aches and pains, something you can do is use a ball at home to roll and release!
Here’s some of our favourites:
☑️For sore feet - place the ball on the floor and roll out the soles of your feet
☑️For head or neck tension - place ball against the wall and roll out your shoulders
☑️For tight hips - sit down on a mat and roll your outer hips
☑️For rounded shoulders - place the ball against the wall and roll just underneath your collarbone (pecs)
Even just a couple of minutes can help melt away any tension - make sure you breathe deeply and stay relaxed whilst you’re rolling.

Is pregnancy posture real? 🤔
Pregnancy is a wild ride. It can do all sorts of fun things to your body. As the fetus begins to grow, your body’s centre of mass changes. Along with all the various hormonal changes, your body will start to experience biomechanical changes, including a change of alignment. Changes can occur from the feet all the way up to your neck and shoulders. Postural changes can sometimes cause discomfort i.e low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, hip pain, carpel tunnel, etc. Remember to check in with yourself and see a Women’s Health Physio if you do experience any persisting discomfort.

How to sleep like a baby when you’re expecting one! 💤
Have you considered your pillow arrangement? Ideally you are supporting your neck, back and of course, bump.
Here are some placement suggestions to get you inspired:
☁️Between the knees (to support the alignment of pelvis/hips)
☁️Under your bump (to support the weight)
☁️Behind your back (for comfort)
Do you have a preferred way of setting up your pillows at night?

Care with Understanding

At Genesis Physiotherapy we understand that different individuals require different approaches. We offer down to earth advice, prompt treatments and service 6 days a week. Our special focus on child bearing women is balanced by our long term association with the maternity wards at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco. Our care is able to carry through your pregnancy, your early post birth weeks, recovery and preparation for return to exercise, & perhaps for preparation for the next addition to your family. Our other very important areas of special interest are pelvic floor rehabilitation, male/ female continence care & male/ female pelvic/ sexual pain syndromes.
