Rafiki Australia Tanzania Donates Reusable Sanitary Pads to Mafinga Schools

Mafinga, Tanzania — October 1, 2025
Rafiki Australia Tanzania, in partnership with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health and the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation, Hon. Cosato Chumi, has launched a major initiative to support menstrual health for schoolgirls in Mafinga.

The organization has donated 500 reusable sanitary pad kits to girls at Kinyanambo Secondary School and Mkombwe Primary School, aiming to reduce school absenteeism caused by lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.

The donation is part of “Rafiki wa Binti”, a program dedicated to empowering Tanzanian girls to manage menstruation with dignity, confidence, and comfort. Each “Binti Pack” includes six high-quality reusable pads, a menstrual health education booklet, and a discreet storage bag.

According to Tanzania’s newly released National Guideline on Menstrual Health and Hygiene (2025), girls without access to proper menstrual products may miss up to 25 percent of school days each year. By addressing this challenge, Rafiki Australia’s initiative seeks to keep more girls in school and help them reach their full potential.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Chumi commended the partnership for supporting local communities and called on stakeholders to collaborate in scaling the program across Mafinga and beyond.

The initiative reflects Rafiki Australia’s commitment to sustainable, community-driven solutions. By working with schools and local leaders, the organization hopes to establish a long-term model for menstrual health education and product distribution throughout Tanzania.

Rafiki wa Binti has distributed Binti Packs to 500 girls in the Kagera Region.

Rafiki Directors, Carol and Salim made the long and difficult journey through the mountains to visit Ruhinda Inclusive Secondary School, a school for children with special needs, and Kawela Secondary School, a school near the Rwandan border with limited access to services.

They received a very warm welcome and conducted education sessions and period underwear fitting for the girls.

Thank you to Hon. Innocent Bashungwa, Minister for Home Affairs, and team, for your support.

Well done to Carol, Salim and Jospeh for all your hard work and long travels to ensure the first distribution in the Kagera Region went smoothy, and to students in great need.

We are sure the Binti Packs will provide the girls with dignity and support them to stay in school all year round. 🩷

On August 27, at the request of President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the first family, Rafiki wa Binti officially launched in Tanzania!

The event was attended by Zanzibari Deputy Minister for Education and Vocation Studies Hon Ali Abdelgulam Hussein, members of Vinjana De Jong leadership team, and Rafiki was represented in Zanzibar by Rafiki Australia Tanzania Directors Joseph Kahama, Caroline Tuni and Salim Sultan.

The day included a ceremonial hand out of Binti Packs at Kidongo Chekunda School, to be followed by education sessions and commitment to donate 2,000 packs (12,000 pairs of underwear) to students in rural areas of Zanzibar.

Over the coming weeks, the Rafiki team will provide period education, fitting and distribution of a further 500 packs each (totalling another 12,000 pairs of period underwear), to Mafinga, Kilwa, Kilimanjaro and Kagera.

A HUGE thank you to our Rafiki Directors Joseph, Carol and Salim who have spent the week in Zanzibar and proudly represented Rafiki.

We’re so excited to get this project off the ground – and what a way to do it, with the support of Government, Mama President and the first family!
