Hope you all have a Happy Halloween 👻 🎃 ! Let’s talk witching hour or hours 🧙🧹. It can be scary, especially for new parents! Witching hour(s) is a time in the evening (usually between 5pm and 11pm) when a usually content and happy newborn has an extremely fussy period
It begins around 2/3 weeks and resolves by 3/4 months.
The most common cause of witching hour is:
➡️Overtiredness
➡️Overstimulation
When little ones become overtired and overstimulated more cortisol and adrenaline is released makIng it difficult to fall asleep, hence the cycle of a crying, unsettled little one who won’t sleep
Witching our can also be cause by
➡️Tummy issues
➡️ Hunger
Witching hour(s) can be extremely challenging so here are our top tips to manage it and things you can try:
✨stay calm
✨try not let little one become overtired
✨ try our CALMS technique or other settling strategies (all revealed in our online course)
✨ decrease stimulation, go into a dark room
✨ white noise
✨ swaddle
✨ go outside or change the environment you are in
✨ try a bath
✨skin on skin
✨cluster feed
✨ use motion (try rock or sway)
✨ baby wear, try a bouncer (you are not creating bad habits you are just meeting your baby where they are developmentally
✨try introduce a night time routine
✨ remember this is a part of your babies development, it is temporary and it will pass⠀
✨ don’t be afraid to ask for help
If you want more tips on preventing overtiredness and strategies to calm your fussy baby, check out our newborn “shaping healthy sleep habits from the beginning” course! It’s a game changer. You will learn to read tired signs, understand awake windows, calm your fussy baby and lay the foundation for healthy sleep habits. It doesn’t involve cry it out or allowing your baby to cry

✨Taking the guessing out of dressing your little one for sleep ✨

This is a post you’re going to want to screenshot 💥, share ➡️ and save ⬇️!

One of the most common questions we get during our consults is: “How should I be dressing my little one for sleep?” 💤❤️
Knowing how to dress your little one for sleep can be confusing! We want to make sure little ones are dressed comfortably for the coolest parts of the night, especially if the temperature drops in the early hours of the morning. If little ones are too cold, it can make drifting through sleep-cycles and staying asleep much harder!

A sleeping bag can be a really helpful tool as it helps to keep your little one a consistent temperature during the night PLUS is also a great strong positive sleep association to help cue to them that sleep-time is coming! 💤

Every little one is different, just like us, some bubbies run more hot and some more cold. We recommend always being guided by the temperature of your little one’s sleep environment PLUS your little one’s cues!

You can feel the back of your little one’s neck and back to see if they are comfortably warm and not too hot or cold (please know it is very normal for their hands and feet to feel cool).

❕Please note: At Sleep Science Guru we recommend our babies’ rooms to be between 18-22°C. Research has shown that when little one’s sleep environment is on this cooler side and little one’s are dressed snug and comfortable it is most conducive for sleep. 💤 Tip: Eczema Specialists recommend 16-18°C for babies who have flare ups or moderate to severe eczema.

This is a post you’re going to want to SCREENSHOT 📸 SAVE ⬇️ and SHARE ➡️ !

Little ones can become overtired easily. When they become overtired, more of the stress hormone cortisol is released, making it harder for them to fall asleep and drift from one sleep cycle to another. Often, parents become fixated on the time on the clock and put their little ones down according to set times. This can result in parents attempting to put little one’s down when they are undertired or overtired

Given that sleep is not under our conscious control, parents will have more success putting their little ones down according to their biological clock (circadian rhythm), which is when they naturally come to a lull and are ready for bed or that nap

But how do we know when they are ready for bed?

We always want to be guided by awake windows and sleepy cues.

Awake window is a fancy term for how long babies are awake in between naps. Parents need to find that delicate balance between their little ones being awake long enough to sleep well, but not so long that we cause an overtired meltdown. You can refer to the awake window norms, but keep in mind that every baby and toddler is different. Always be guided by the age-appropriate awake window norms and your little one’s sleepy cues.

EXPERT GURU TIP: The first awake window of the day is often the shortest. The awake window is also likely to be on the shorter side following a short nap.

Getting the awake windows right for your little one and knowing their cues will lead to better sleep!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT…💫
We’ve been keeping TWO big secrets 🤫 the past few months... Jenna (the founder of Sleep Science) and Kate (one of our senior sleep gurus) are expecting 👶🏻! Both of our little Georgia’s are going to be big sisters!Cant wait to share this adventure and journey with all of you! Xx

I’m sure you have all heard the saying, “You should never wake a sleeping baby” which seems to make intuitive sense. Why would you want to wake a sleeping baby?👶🏻🤷🏽‍♀️

We know that sleep is so important! It is crucial for your baby’s development 🧠and it gives us a little break. But, whilst sleep is good for your little one, there are times you SHOULD wake your sleeping baby.

When babies are born they don’t know the difference between day time and night time! Babies need a certain amount of sleep (and calories) within a 24-hour period.  So we advise waking your little one to help regulate their circadian rhythm so that nights don’t become more difficult.

Here is when we would advise waking your little one:

➕ If it’s been longer than 3 - 4 hours since the start of the last feeding (wake them up to feed 🥛)! This generally means that most babies taking more than 1 nap will never sleep longer than 2-2.5 hours at any given nap. Waking them to get those calories in during the day means they will be up less at night.

➕ Wake your baby if they have already met their total daytime sleep needs.

MAX daytime sleep norms (with 11-12 hour nights):
0-2 months= 7-8 hours
3 months= 6-7 hours
4 months= 5-6 hours
5-6 months= 3-5 hours
7-9 months= 3-4 hours
9-24 months = 2-3 hours
*please note these are just norms. Every baby is so different

➕Some babies come to a natural lull and are ready for bed around 7-8pm (based on their circadian rhythm being regulated by natural light). If you are aiming for a regular consistent bed time around 7-8pm you’ll want nap time to end by:
6-7pm for a 1-3 month old (please note some newborns actually do better with a later bedtime around 10pm)
5-6pm for a 3-4 month old
4:30-5:30pm for a 5-6 month old
3:30-4:30pm for a 7-9 month old
3-4pm for a 9-15 month old
2-3pm for a 15-24 month old

While we believe in cued care, waking a baby just helps realign your little ones biological sleep clock with real time and sets their days and nights up for success. But mostly it means your little one can have their long, restorative sleep when you have yours.
