Funnily enough, the MOST competitive games at ActUp WA are the actors favourites!
Competition gets a bad rap sometimes, but when it’s healthy, it can be such a powerful tool for kids and teens.
Before we play any games that have winners or elimination rounds, I always explain something to my actors: you might not win today... and that’s okay.
That’s part of the game, and honestly, it’s part of life too. There will be moments where you absolutely shine… and moments where things don’t go your way. Both are valuable.
Before we start, I ask for a show of hands from anyone who’s comfortable participating even if they might not come first. If they’re okay with that, they jump in and play. If they’re not feeling up for that possibility that day, that’s totally fine too, they can sit to the side and watch, cheering on their friends.
I truly believe competition, when framed the right way, builds resilience and sportsmanship. When kids understand the purpose behind it, the shift is incredible.
I’ve seen actors cheer for each other more, bounce back quicker, and most importantly... have WAY MORE FUN with the games.
And that’s the real win.
