This year, the theme for World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) is “Autism and Humanity - Every Life Has Value.”

This theme affirms the dignity and worth of all autistic people as part of our shared human future and values all types of brains (or neurotypes).

At Freo Speech, we aim to use a neurodiversity-affirming lens in all of our interactions and therapy.

Our therapists work with Autistic children and adults in the areas of communication (including speech, language, and social communication), play and interaction, emotional regulation, and supporting participation in everyday environments such as home, school, and the community.

🟢 Do you know a child who would benefit from a little boost in bringing their ideas to life on the page? They can join our Holiday Narrative Writing Group and discover how to create fun characters, exciting adventures, and endings that tie everything together. They will get to share their ideas, play with language, and learn simple tricks to make their writing shine.

🟢 Kellie is running the group in April and brings her previous experience as an upper primary school teacher to support students to develop their writing skills. Students will be shown how to build a character and a setting, plan and write exciting stories and expand on their vocabulary and sentences.

🎉 International Cochlear Implant Day 🎉

A cochlear implant helps people with significant hearing loss hear by sending sound signals directly to the hearing nerve, bypassing the damaged part of the ear. Unlike hearing aids, they don’t just make sounds louder, they help the brain receive sound differently 🧠👂

So how do speech pathologists help?
👂 Build listening & sound awareness
🗣️ Support speech and language development
📚 Strengthen literacy & phonological awareness
💬 Grow confidence in everyday conversations
🤝 Guide families with practical strategies at home.

We recently wrapped up another year of final-year student speech pathology placements, and we’ve been reflecting on the kind words they shared with us.

What stood out most wasn’t just comments about learning assessments or managing caseloads; it was hearing that students felt supported and safe to grow.

Supporting the next generation of speech pathologists is something we value deeply, and we’ve dedicated nearly 10 years to this project. These placements aren’t just about meeting university requirements; they’re about mentorship, collaboration, and giving students a genuine insight into what this profession can be.

A big thank you to the universities we work with, the schools that welcome us in, and especially the students who bring such curiosity, energy, and care to their placements each semester.

We look forward to another year of supporting emerging clinicians, sharing knowledge, and Learning How Words Work togther!
