Researchers at Curtin University are looking for:

✅ Children aged 11-14 who have language difficulties (including Developmental Language Disorder and Language Disorder associated with another diagnosis)

✅ Their parents/ caregivers

✅ Clinicians who work with the language or mental health needs of these children (e.g., speech pathologists, psychologists)

Your participation would involve:

A 10-minute survey
A 1-hour child, parent or clinician interview

Do you know a child who wants to feel more confident writing essays for school?
In our Analytical Essay Writing Holiday Group, students will learn how to break down texts, plan their ideas, and structure essays that are clear, detailed, and persuasive. With step-by-step guidance, they’ll practise writing introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions that really show their thinking.

Alannah has run this course each school holiday period for several years and has extensive knowledge in this area. She will focus on teaching students how to:

🔸Figure out exactly what the question is asking
🔸Plan ideas so an essay is easier to write
🔸Structure the overall essay, each paragraph, and even sentences
🔸Use quotes and examples to back up points
🔸Connect ideas so the essay makes sense

Our Early Phonics Holiday Group is all about having fun while learning the building blocks of reading and spelling. Through games and hands-on activities, children will explore letter-sound connections, blending sounds to make words, and breaking words up into individual sounds.

The energetic Maddie Olson is running the group and has created a perfect way to boost early literacy skills while keeping the holiday learning light and playful!

✨ Persuasive Writing for Years 5, 6, & 7 ✨
In our Persuasive Writing Holiday Group, students will discover how to plan, structure, and write powerful arguments that grab attention and convince their readers. Through explicit teaching and practical activities, they’ll build confidence with persuasive techniques and strategies they can use in NAPLAN and beyond.

This is a great group for upper primary students who are expected to create well-structured arguments with evidence and examples. It is also suitable for year 7 students who need an extra boost to their persuasive writing by reviewing and strengthening foundational elements to then build upon.

Tianee has been teaching these skills to children for several years and now brings this experience into a new group focusing on:
🔸Understanding the purpose and structure of persuasive texts
🔸Planning and organising ideas before writing
🔸Using persuasive techniques (e.g., rhetorical questions and emotive language)
🔸Developing convincing arguments with evidence and examples
🔸Expanding vocabulary to strengthen impact
🔸Writing strong introductions and conclusions

They can join our Holiday Narrative Writing Group and discover how to create fun characters, exciting adventures, and endings that tie everything together. They will get to share their ideas, play with language, and learn simple tricks to make their writing shine.

The wonderful Vandana will be running the group, and she will focus on teaching:

As we near the end of Speech Pathology Week, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone that attended our War of the Words: Syntax Strikes Back quiz night last Friday. The event which kicked off Speech Pathology Week here in Perth, was a night to celebrate our profession and the power of communication with trivia-fuelled fun and plenty of laughs!

The funds we raised will go towards a brand-new community research grant launched by us which will support clinicians who are passionate about promoting their practice-based evidence therapy techniques.

From ticket sales and raffles on the night, we were able to raise a total of $1500 which we at Freo Speech, will match dollar for dollar!!
