This month marks five years since the introduction of New Zealand’s Medicinal Cannabis Scheme, a significant step forward in expanding access to regulated and quality-assured medicinal cannabis products for patients in Aotearoa.

A recent TVNZ article has drawn renewed attention to New Zealand’s evolving medicinal cannabis landscape. The piece examines the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme and explores the perspectives of patients, prescribers, and industry stakeholders.

Since the scheme’s launch, over 305,000 products have been prescribed, according to Ministry of Health data from 2024, demonstrating growing interest in medicinal cannabis as a therapeutic option. The story looks into the role of cannabis-specific clinics in supporting access while also addressing the ongoing caution among many general practitioners, a reflection of the need for continued clinical education.

The guide, titled “Medicinal cannabis: A guide for employers and employees”, is a significant step forward in providing patients, providers, and employers clear and concise information to understand obligations in employment. How to Access Medicinal Cannabis in New Zealand:

1️⃣ Consult Your Doctor�Talk to your doctor about your condition and whether medicinal cannabis might be a suitable treatment option for you.

2️⃣ Get a Prescription�Medicinal cannabis must be prescribed by a registered New Zealand doctor.

3️⃣ Visit a Pharmacy. Take your prescription to a pharmacy to have it dispensed. Prices can vary between pharmacies, so it’s worth comparing to find the best option.

💡 If you are not comfortable talking to your regular GP, or your doctor has shown reluctance to prescribe, it may be worth talking to a specialist clinic or ask for a referral.
