Leaders can have as much, if not more, influence on our mental health as our partners.
When I think back, I’ve had leaders who were brilliant and some who definitely impacted my mental health in not-so-great ways.
One leader who stands out is Chris Carville.
In 2017 and 2018, I was working on the gas network at ATCO and had this idea. A vision to run workshops on mindfulness and meditation for workers like me. Tools that were helping me and could help others too.
I mentioned it casually to Chris, who was leading our crew at the time.
Without hesitation, he said, “How can I help? What can we do to make this happen?”
That belief meant everything.
I started getting up before work (with some help from Jelly 😻) to build the sessions. Chris gave me space in toolbox meetings to deliver them, encouraged crew feedback, and supported me every step of the way.
ATCO backed it too, creating a space where someone like Chris could lead with kindness and purpose.
We often forget leadership doesn’t always need to be loud or grand.
Check in with someone and really mean it
Make time to listen, not just manage
Lead with heart and stay grounded in purpose
Real leadership is about showing up human first
