It is a common misconception that you can rely on ovulation prediction kits (OKP's) to confirm ovulation. OKP's work by measuring the levels of Luteinizing hormone (LH) and identifying a surge which indicates ovulation is likely to occur in the next 12-36 hours. External factors such as stress and hormone imbalances can cause ovulation to be delayed. A more accurate way of confirming ovulation has occurred is by temperature charting your basal body temperature. After ovulation has occurred, progesterone increases and causes a basal body temperature rise (usually 0.2-0.5 degrees) and is sustained until the next menstrual period or through pregnancy.
