📣 “I’m just going to…” is NOT informed consent.

Too often in labor and birth, parents hear phrases like:

👉 “I’m just going to check your cervix.”
👉 “I’m just going to break your water.”
👉 “I’m just going to give you something to help things along.”

But here’s the thing: there’s no such thing as “just” when it comes to your body.

🔍 These are all medical procedures.
🧠 They all come with benefits, risks, and alternatives.
🤝 And they all require your informed consent—not a casual heads-up as it’s already happening.

Informed consent means you:
✔ Understand what’s being offered
✔ Know your options
✔ Have time to ask questions
✔ Give voluntary agreement—without pressure or coercion

You deserve to be an active participant in your care, not a passive bystander. Birth is not a checklist of things that are done to you—it’s a process you are part of.

💬 Let’s change the language from “I’m just going to…” to:
➡ “Would you like to talk about this option?”
➡ “Here’s what I recommend and why—what are your thoughts?”
➡ “Do you feel comfortable moving forward?”

✨ Informed consent isn’t a formality. It’s your right.

Our sweet baby girl is finally here! Welcome to the world Lucy Leanna Poppy 🩷

Surprising us a little over 3 weeks early after a very challenging pregnancy full of too much vomiting, many specialist appointments, hospital visits, so many ultrasound scans and 8 days of emergency hospital bedrest.. you were worth every second.

Mason is obsessed with you already and so are we!

1 in 3 Parents Say “Yes” Without Fully Understanding the Risks 😔

Did you know that 1 in 3 parents “agree” to interventions during labour without actually understanding the risks or their options? Let’s be clear: a doctor saying, “I’m just going to…” is NOT informed consent.

💡 What IS Informed Consent?
It’s about more than just saying “yes” or “no.” It means having all the information to make a choice you feel good about, including:
👉 Benefits: What’s the upside of this intervention?
👉 Risks: What are the potential downsides?
👉 Alternatives: What other options are there?
👉 Interventions: What happens if we do this now?
👉 Nothing: What if we wait and see?
👉 Space: Can I take a moment to think it over?

You should feel confident in your decisions—not rushed or confused. Informed consent is your right, not a privilege.

When parents aren’t fully informed, they can feel disempowered or regretful about their birth experience. Understanding your options isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about feeling respected, heard, and in control of your birth journey.

You can ALWAYS ask questions like, “What happens if we wait?”
You deserve explanations in language you understand.
Taking a moment to think things through is okay—this is your body, your baby, your birth.

What the Heck is a TENS Machine? 🤔

If you’ve heard of a TENS machine and thought, “Is this some kind of sci-fi birth gadget?”—don’t worry, you’re not alone! Let’s break it down.

💡 What is a TENS Machine?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (don’t worry, you don’t need to memorize that). It’s a small, handheld device that sends gentle electrical pulses through sticky pads placed on your back. These pulses help block pain signals and boost endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers) during labour.

It’s completely drug-free and non-invasive.
You’re in control of the intensity—crank it up when contractions get intense, dial it down when they ease off.
It’s portable, so you can move around and stay active while using it.

Ready at a Moment’s Notice: From 37 weeks onward, my phone is always on, and I’m prepared to drop everything and be there for you when labour begins🤱💪
24/7 Availability: Day or night, you can count on me to be there, offering unwavering support and guidance as you bring your baby into the world. 🌙☀️
Before 37 Weeks:
Leading up to the 37-week mark, I’m still here for you, but things are a bit more flexible:

Responsive Communication: I’ll respond to your messages, calls, and emails within a reasonable timeframe. Whether it’s a question, concern, or just a chat, I’m here to help. 📱💬
Scheduled Check-ins: We’ll have regular check-ins to ensure you’re feeling prepared and supported. These touchpoints help us build a strong connection and plan for the big day. 🗓️

I think sometimes we forget that children are just small people, trying to figure out the world. They are allowed to have their feelings. They are allowed to not like something and it's ok if they loose their s**t sometimes... We need to stop expecting kids to handle all of their emotions, when most adults struggle to handle all of ours.
