Autistic children often have strengths in visual, rule-based and interest-based thinking. You can build children’s skills by working with these strengths.

Did you hear about the recent announcement in Victoria? They are introducing synthetic phonics programs for a minimum 25 minutes each day for Prep to Year 2 students!
What's that? "Systematic synthetic phonics is a structured approach that explicitly teaches the relationship between sounds and letters to read words."
Why is that amazing? The research has shown that a systematic approach to teaching synthetic phonics has the best reading outcomes for all students!
Its been great seeing schools slowly make the transition in WA, but there's still more change to go before all students in WA have access to good quality synthetic phonics input.

The Allan Labor Government will embed evidence-based teaching and learning in the Education State – responding to the latest evidence by putting explicit teaching in every classroom. This includes best practice teaching of phonics in the early years.Minister for Education Ben Carroll today announc...

Another interesting article on the bilingualism!

More than half of my clients are growing up in homes where English is not the first or only language. I think it's a great thing. Bilingualism is a tremendous asset living on this increasingly connected planet. We need more of it in Australia.

Myth or fact?
"Children who are bilingual are more likely to develop speech/language difficulties"
The short answer is... - its complicated! Some children can have some difficulties with learning all the aspects of both languages at the same time as a child who is just learning one language. For example, their grammar might be a little delayed compared to peers, or the number of words they know (vocabulary) might be less in one language. BUT, there are HUGE benefits to learning more than one language, and most children have caught up to peers by 10.

Its super important for children to continue learning their first language, so DON'T stop speaking to them in their first language to "just focus on English." Children use their first language to help them learn their second language.

We will be posting some articles on this over the next couple of nights.
