AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath was among a panel of leaders who came together at a Business News event, The Future of Aged Care, to discuss how the sector should move forward amid significant changes impacting the nation.

A general consensus among panellists at the event was a desire for a united vision not only among aged care providers, but disability, health, early childhood, veteran services, and housing providers.

Dr Hoath said communication among stakeholders would help identify key pressure areas in care.

“Over time, [we can] be a little bit more proactive rather than reactionary,” he said.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to The West Australian about lead contamination in PCH’s water.

“While we understand that remediation action was taken, and there have been no similar incidents in recent times, it would be preferable if doctors and other health professionals on the site were aware of any such occurrences,” Dr Hoath said.

“Simply relying on scrutiny of internal operations by outside sources to expose problems and prompt responses is not the optimal way of dealing with the staff for whom this is their workplace, nor the patients and families using the vital services provided at PCH.

“We expect that any future instances of exceedance of lead levels, or any similar work safety concerns that require remediation are communicated by PCH management to doctors on the site in the most appropriate and timely manner.”

The AMA (WA) has welcomed news that iHerb has suspended the sale of melatonin products to Australia due to child overdose concerns.

President Dr Kyle Hoath explained that buying medications online from overseas companies can be risky because we can't be certain what's in them, and there's no opportunity to speak with a pharmacist about what's safe.

It's really important that people seek help from their doctor or their health specialist to figure out what's going on with issues like troubled sleep, rather than just buying melatonin online.

West Australians are struggling more than the rest of the country to afford essential items like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and period products, according to a survey run by charity Good360 Australia.

AMA (WA) infectious diseases and microbiology spokesman Dr Jonathan Chambers warns that this could cause serious physical and mental health issues.

Dr Chambers said not being able to clean yourself or your home properly could lead to skin infections like cellulitis, impetigo and golden staph, as well as respiratory infections including the flu and RSV, and diarrhoeal diseases.

One in seven people had found it hard to afford personal hygiene products in the past six months, while almost one in six were struggling to buy cleaning items.

Almost 12% of the Western Australians surveyed were skipping hygiene products to afford other essentials.

In his President's Blog, AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath writes about an eventful fortnight in our public health system.

After expressing his weariness over the constant references to our ‘world-class’ health system, reports started to emerge about a range of ongoing maintenance issues at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), including plumbing issues, leaking “radioactive waste”, human excrement in the intensive care unit, mould and a possible legionella exposure.

Initially, these concerns were downplayed by the Government, but then a two-year, $50 million Health Asset Maintenance Fund was announced, to address serious infrastructure challenges facing SCGH, Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), and Armadale Health Service.

While we welcome the fund, it represents only a fraction of what is needed to maintain safe, functional hospital environments.
