The AMA (WA) is supporting the WA Government's "Be Wise, Immunise" public awareness campaign to encourage Western Australians to protect themselves against the flu this winter.

WA's free flu vaccination program starts today, with the Government setting strong targets to keep the public informed on its progress.

The AMA (WA) strongly supports efforts to lift flu vaccination rates ahead of what is expected to be another challenging winter. Last year, WA experienced one of the worst flu seasons on record, resulting in our hospitals treating thousands of seriously ill patients of all ages.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath says that improving vaccination uptake is an important part of a broader winter preparedness effort to keep people well and reduce avoidable strain on the health system.

"The flu vaccine is safe, free for eligible groups, and widely accessible across Western Australia through GPs, community clinics pop-ups and other settings," he said.

AMA (WA) Council member and GP, Dr Simon Torvaldsen, spoke to the ABC about reports of serious infections after visits to nail salons.

Dr Torvaldsen spoke about the importance of being vigilant about proper practices, including the re-use of equipment and treatment of cuts. But he also warns that even under best practice, the risk is not absolutely zero.

For 15 years, the Gilead Australia Medical Fellowships have supported Australian-led clinical research focused on generating evidence to support improved patient outcomes in real-world healthcare settings.

Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $4 million to Australian-led research initiatives, focusing on strengthening models of care, addressing unmet medical needs, and reducing barriers to diagnosis and treatment across communities throughout Australia.

Applications for the 2027 Gilead Australia Medical Fellowships are now open to eligible Australian researchers, healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary teams undertaking projects aligned with the program’s priority disease areas. Applications close on 14 May 2026.

Prevention doesn’t always attract the same attention as crisis response, but it is where some of the most meaningful gains for our health system — and our community — can be made.

Over the last few weeks, that message has been central to the AMA (WA)’s advocacy, whether we’ve been talking about emergency medicine, hospital infrastructure, road safety, vaccination, or keeping our health workforce safe.

Prevention won’t always make headlines, but it remains our best investment: in safer communities, stronger hospitals, and a more sustainable health system for the future.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to Nine News about the State Government's announcement that it will add more than 100 beds to the public system over the winter months.

While welcoming the additional beds, Dr Hoath explains that WA's health system is overwhelmed, and needs another 1000 beds "yesterday".

The State Budget has foreshadowed bed increases over the next four years that hopefully start to address the shortfall.

The AMA (WA) will continue working with the State Government to support doctors and health workers, and provide Western Australians with the public health system they need.

The AMA has launched a national social media campaign encouraging Australians to speak with their doctor about vaccination.

The 'Have the jab chat' campaign responds to growing confusion about where Australians are getting their health information — and how that information is influencing decisions about vaccination.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath issued a direct message to parents who may be hesitant about vaccination.

“Vaccinations are not a new part of medicine. Vaccinations have been around for a long time and we know they are safe,” Dr Hoath said. “Vaccinations have saved millions and millions of lives across the globe and will continue to do so. But if we have these drops in vaccination rates, we will see illnesses return to our communities.”

With WA hospitals under pressure and winter approaching, Dr Hoath said immunisation remains one of the most effective tools available.

“Ultimately the most important thing is to get yourself and your loved ones vaccinated this winter,” he said. “That is the thing you can do that’ll have the biggest impact of keeping everybody safe and healthy this winter.”

In case you missed it, AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to Four Corners about why some WA postcodes have significantly higher rates of ADHD prescribing than other parts of Australia.

Dr Hoath explains that WA has historically had higher rates of ADHD treatment, both in children and adults, than other states.

"With the increase in ADHD awareness and, therefore, diagnosis and treatment, as a whole, it has lifted the country up, which has kept WA proportionally ahead," he said.

Western Australia is lagging behind in the national fight against illicit to***co, according to a new report released by the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH).

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath said to***co is a scourge on the public health system and a tragedy for those who become hooked on this pernicious drug.

“Tobacco-related conditions account for tens of thousands of bed days across the system,” he said.

“We need every advantage to help reduce the familiar surge in respiratory illness that winter brings. Last winter there was record ambulance ramping, systemic bed block, and doctors pushed to the brink. We can’t have another winter like 2025, and the fight against to***co is a significant part of ensuring that is the case.”

WA has made some progress on illicit to***co, with recent reforms introducing tougher penalties, now among the highest in the country, as well as closure orders for offending businesses.

The AMA (WA) supports ACOSH in calling for tighter controls across the entire supply chain, including stronger requirements for licensed wholesalers and retailers, as well as a ban on online to***co sales to better protect young people.
