Post-public holiday slump? Long Covid? Burnout?
In the past couple of years we have had ever-changing rules and conditions thrown at our lifestyles. This has led to mental fatigue as our brains try to keep up.

Even working from home can increase distractions as focus is shifted to household chores and childcare. Some techniques that can help are:

Pomodoro – A technique for managing attention. Schedule 5 minutes of rest for every half an hour of solid work. It increases focus and productivity, while rewarding yourself at the end of it. It encourages you to challenge yourself to complete tasks.
Change your environment – Sit outside after lunch to get some vitamin D. Sit next to your radio for an hour so you can listen to music.

Brainfood - Have snacks and thirst quenchers readily available in the space you are working in. Think nuts, berries and a nice cold jug of water.

With a recent report revealing that 1 in 5 aged care workers are planning to leave the industry in the next 12 months, how can organisations show that they value their employees?

Give them a reason to love work – Aged care workers stay in their jobs for their patients, but with yet another Australian Budget ignoring the effectiveness of wage incentives, there needs to be another aspect present to make their hard work worth it.

Trust – When you have a great amount of trust, you have a higher level of engagement. Workers are not too scared to speak up for what they want, as they know that they will be met with respect.

Increase internal hiring – Promote your employees if there is an opening which gives them to hope of career development, and the organisation the knowledge that the role is in capable, experienced hands.

Maintaining a positive culture based on shared understanding is becoming increasingly hard to do. Factors like growth, employee turnover and a shift to decentralized forms of working makes it a constant struggle to keep everyone on the same page. The risk is that the internal language, that cultural glue that keeps an organization running, can become fragmented. And when that happens, people might decide to look for work elsewhere.

With the Great Resignation or Great Reshuffle giving employees more options than ever about where they can work, it’s put a lot of pressure on organizations of all kinds to build the kinds of “sticky” cultures employees want to work for. Employees want to be personally and professionally invested in companies. They’re seeking purpose over pay check and coaches rather than bosses.

One of the biggest challenges to sticky cultures that most organizations face, even big tech companies, is the shift to remote work. Workers suddenly lack the regular human connection they were used to—which has also made it harder to create a culture based on peer-to-peer connections.

During the first few months of the pandemic where quarantine, isolation and lockdown were relatively foreign words, people were clinging onto their jobs, even if they hated them. For essential workers, they had no choice on the matter; they risked their health to keep the world going. Now, white-collar professionals are jumping at the chance to reskill, retrain and reinvent their

Companies are making massive changes too. Some are cutting the commute by creating neighbourhood co-working hubs for those who live further from the office. Restaurants are converting dining areas into co-working spaces during off hours, or renting out private rooms by the day for meetings and brainstorming sessions. Google and Microsoft are starting to integrate prominent remote-videoconferencing capabilities more fully into meeting spaces, so that remote workers do not feel like an afterthought. Augmented reality, which so far Pokémon Go has notably used, could end up transforming into a useful work tool, allowing remote workers to “seem” to be in the room with on-site workers.

Over the past decades, various types of businesses have rotated in and out of favour—conglomerates in the ’60s, junk bonds in the ’80s, tech in the ’00s—but the basic workplace structure, of office cubicles and face time, has remained the same. It is time to allow the creative ideas to flow.

"WA is already the most economically free and active State in Australia due to our relaxed restrictions, and with the Phase 4 and 5 changes we've just announced, that is set to continue."

If you are currently looking for a new position in WA go to https://www.choiceone.com.au/current-vacancies/
for all our current vacancies!

Today, as part of outlining our roadmap for the further easing of restrictions in WA, we had planned to announce a tentative date for the removal of WA’s hard border.

However, with the situation evolving in Victoria – based on our health advice, we have decided to put that on hold.

WA is already the most economically free and active State in Australia due to our relaxed restrictions, and with the Phase 4 and 5 changes we've just announced, that is set to continue.

Our State’s handling and response to COVID-19 has been world-leading and soon, we will be able to enjoy the benefits of that response even more.

But it's important to acknowledge that our hard border has been an essential component for how quickly and significantly we've been able to make these changes.

The current situation in Victoria is dire. It’s extremely concerning.

The spike in cases there is being closely monitored here.

This is why a decision on our hard border will only ever be based on expert health advice.

If Victoria has taught us anything in the last few days, it’s that the worst thing that could occur right now is the reintroduction of harsh restrictions in our community.

It would devastate our local economy - more jobs would be lost, it would hurt small businesses and be very difficult for many of us to handle.

Our hard border has been in place unashamedly to protect the health and well-being of Western Australians.

It has allowed us to confidently ease restrictions more than any other State and open up our local economy.

Throughout this crisis, I have communicated clearly and openly with the public of WA.

I can tell you that the tentative date for the removal of the hard border was going to be the 8th of August.

But right now, it would be irresponsible of me to earmark that date as our potential opening with the rest of the country.

I wish I could give an indicative date today, but if I did, it would be against our health advice and quite frankly, it probably wouldn’t hold.

An indicative date will be set in the future, when it’s safe to do so. That date will take into account locally acquired infection rates in the eastern states.

To be clear - the WA hard border will only be removed when the WA Chief Health Officer is confident the spread of infection is controlled in the eastern states.

Our position is crystal clear on this.

I know some businesses in the tourism and aviation industries are hurting – I wish this wasn’t the case.

I can only urge every Western Australian, if they are in the position to travel and holiday in WA to support local tourism businesses – do it.

Think of it as your civic duty for your State.

I know for some businesses, this is still not enough, but we will work with you and do what we can to help everyone get to the other side.

Given the situation over east, I just cannot risk allowing the infection to return to WA and cause havoc.

As we have all seen with COVID, it will devastate businesses and life as we know it.

I will not risk the health of Western Australians and the potential damage to our economy, which is rebuilding now after the height of the pandemic.

WA is moving ahead along our roadmap in a more progressive manner, both economically and socially.

The Chief Health Officer is confident Western Australia can continue to move ahead of the national position because of our border controls and success to date.

Our phased approach has allowed us to kick-start WA's economy.

It has allowed us to progress even further.

But we all need to be aware that the virus has not been eradicated, so we all have a personal responsibility to keep the community safe.

Mining News!

Australia has inked an agreement with India to supply critical minerals needed for the new energy economy. “India presents growing opportunities for Australia’s critical minerals, especially as the nation looks to build its manufacturing sector, defence and space capabilities,” Pitt said.

Australia is pushing the small but strategic markets. Lithium exports are expected to be worth $3 billion in 2024-2025, compared with $69 billion for iron ore.

Pitt said Australia had the potential to be one of the top suppliers of cobalt and zircon to India, being in the top three for global production of these minerals

“Individuals can enjoy a successful career and better relationships by relying on their emotional intelligence. Studies have shown that people with high levels of emotional intelligence have greater career success, foster stronger personal relations, have effective leadership skills and are healthier than those with low emotional quotient (EQ). Moreover, competitive advantage can actually be achieved through the EQ-related capacities for creating trusting relationships, improving energy and effectiveness in high-pressure situations, and creating the future.”

When many people think of creativity, they think of artists, writers and designers, but that’s not completely correct.

Creativity is really just solving problems in original ways, in new ways, to uncover hidden patterns and connections.

Due to the pandemic, when football returned in Germany fans weren't allowed in person. Instead of having empty seats they showed how creativity can be wondrous to the whole.

Bundesliga teams Borussia Mönchengladbach and Leverkusen played in front of 13,000 cardboard cutout fans at the weekend. Fans paid $20 to be on the cutouts, and proceeds went to charity.

This is just one example of why Creativity is the most in demand soft skill that employer’s look for:
