Meet our Miss NAIDOC Perth 2024 finalists!!
Leonie Wilkes, a 25-year-old Nyoongar woman from Perth, Western Australia, proudly identifies with her Whadjuk and Binjareb heritage. Born into the Wilkes/Davis and Kearing/Corbett families, Leonie's upbringing reflects the rich cultural traditions of both Whadjuk and Binjareb Country, with her father's roots in Whadjuk land and her mother's in Binjareb land.
Currently serving as an Administration Coordinator at Karla Kuliny Aboriginal Corporation, Leonie is deeply involved in community activities, drawing inspiration from strong Aboriginal leaders. Through her family business, she has contributed to various initiatives, from teaching traditional dance and language in schools to providing cultural awareness training and supporting survivors of domestic violence.
With a passion for performing deeply ingrained since childhood, Leonie has been dancing traditional Nyoongar dances since the age of five. While she loves to dance, her true aspiration lies in singing. Raised to embrace her culture from a young age, Leonie is determined to instill confidence in future generations to openly celebrate their Nyoongar identity. She sees herself as a conduit for passing on Nyoongar histories, protocols, language, and dance, ensuring that her culture remains a cherished part of her life and is shared with younger generations.
Applying for opportunities like this is a way for Leonie to develop her leadership skills and provide encouragement to others seeking to reconnect with their culture. Guided by her confident and outgoing family, she aims to make them proud and empower others to embrace their Indigenous heritage with pride.
