Confused about how Medicare covers speech therapy? Here’s a simple breakdown 👇



If your child has a suspected or confirmed eligible condition, you can access support with a referral from a GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist.



Step 1: Assessment for up to 8 sessions (typically starting with 4). This assessment is used to understand your child’s needs.

Step 2: Therapy for up to 20 sessions based on goals identified in assessment. Available in-person or via telehealth.

Sessions are completed in 2x blocks, with reports provided to guide ongoing care.

Recent updates mean children are eligible if they have:

Speech sound disorders – difficulties producing sounds clearly and coordinating speech movements.

Stutter – change in speech fluency (repetition, prolongation, block).

Cleft lip and/or palate
