If I could rewind 5 years and talk to 39-year-old-Melissa – I would tell her that she wasn’t going crazy. She wasn’t imagining things. She was at the beginning of her perimenopause journey and all she needed was a new approach (not to keep doing the same things she had always done and expect to feel better).
These are the signs I wish I had noticed earlier:
😴 I wasn’t sleeping the same – I was having random wake ups through the night & I just wasn’t getting the same good quality sleep anymore.
🙄 My belly was getting ‘squishier’ – I was eating the same, doing the same exercise, but my pants just started feeling tighter around my middle. I couldn’t just ‘eat well’ and see results anymore.
😫 Stress felt like it hit harder and my anxiety was more intense – I just wasn’t coping with the demands of life in the same way. I couldn’t juggle as many balls and my capacity was less.
🩸 My periods were getting heavier and each month felt like the flood gates opened – I felt like had reverted back to my early menstrual years when I was 16. I was bleeding through onto my bed sheets, being careful when I stood up in fear of blood flooding onto my pants, running off to the toilet every few hours to change my pads, & seeing chucky clots fall onto the bathroom floor when I was showering.
😬 My hair was getting thinner – every time I washed my hair, clumps of it would end up being left in my hands. I felt like my ponytail was getting less voluminous and my hairline was thinning out.
😵💫 I was forgetting things and I felt like the simplest of tasks required my full focus – I would sit down to work and get easily distracted, which meant that it would take me twice as long to complete the task I set out to do. Keeping lists was an essential part of life.
