Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

But it’s not enough to just be “aware”
Today I met a young guy on top of a pile of mulch.
He was late for school, poor mum was trying to get him down, but oh my, was he having the time of his life.
Waving his collection of sticks in the air I wondered what amazing story he was thinking of.

I looked up at him and said “sticks! Let’s look at them” With a smile and my arms open, and he made his way down the mulch to share his joy with me. He then walked into school with mum proudly displaying his sticks in his hands.

The theme this year is — Autism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value.

And this is very definitely true!

That young guy brightened my Thursday morning with his pure joy. If only we could all be a bit more like him the world would be a much brighter and beautiful place.

Autistic people are not a problem to be solved. They bring creativity, perspective, and humanity to our world — and they deserve dignity, inclusion, and equal rights.

This is why it matters.
This is why I do what I do. ✨

Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) isn’t just about getting a device.A talker. An iPad.

It’s so much more than that.

It’s about when it’s introduced.
It’s about how it’s taught.
It’s about whether a child sees it as something that brings connection, choice, and joy.

I’ve had the absolute privilege of knowing this incredible Little Star since she was just 9 months old… and now, look at her go. 💫

From when she worked out she could tell me to “stop” to now when she can make requests, give directions, name objects, comment but most of all show the world her amazing personality.

This didn’t happen overnight.
There is no quick fix.
No magic solution.

Because communication isn’t a “thing” you hand over and suddenly everything changes.

It’s building meaning.
It’s creating moments where communication feels powerful and worth it.
It’s about timing.
It’s about teaching and learning together - both the person and those important in their lives.
It’s about ensuring the individual experiences communication as meaningful.

Because AAC is not the outcome.
It is the pathway that leads to belonging, choice, and being truly understood.

And that’s where the real impact lies. 🌟

At first glance… this looks like scribbles.

But look a bit closer.

What do you see?

This is what communication looks like.

It’s not always neat.
It’s not always clear.
And it doesn’t always look like words.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful or equally as valued.

Because it’s not about what the child is doing…
👉 it’s about why they’re doing it.

If we focus only on the “what” (the scribbles, the speech, the behaviour), we miss the point.

When we shift our focus to the reason behind it, we start to really understand.

And that’s where the magic happens ✨

Less correction.
More understanding.

That’s what supports real communication 🌟

Back to school day is here 🌟

School starts today — new classrooms, new teachers, new routines.

For some kids it’ll be exciting. For others, a bit tricky. Both are just right 🌟

Remember: the first day doesn’t need to be perfect. Kids are learning far more than reading and writing today — they’re figuring out routines, communication, friendships, and how school works.

Wishing all Little Stars a smooth start and parents a strong coffee and a deep breath and a high 5 for making it through January 😉
