Keratoconus can make laser eye surgery unsuitable, but that doesn’t mean clear vision is off the table.

I’m thrilled to share that our manuscript titled “Assessing the Visual and Refractive Outcomes of PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision Treatment in Myopic and Hyperopic Presbybyopic Patients in Western Australia” has been officially accepted for publication in the Journal of Refractive Surgery.
This peer-reviewed acceptance in a leading international journal dedicated to refractive and lens-based procedures represents strong validation of the excellent outcomes we’ve achieved with PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision at Crystal Eye & Laser Centre.

What an honour and privilege to be Perth and Western Australia’s first ophthalmologist to implant the ART IOL which uses natural non toxic spherical aberrations to give patients spectacle independence. Pre and post op comparison of a patient that I recently posted on who had a corneal transplant in his right eye.

Pre-op unaided vision was 6/120 and corrected he could only see 6/36. At 6 weeks post-op he has 6/9+ unaided vision. He pinholes and corrected to 6/6+ 🤯. More than 10 diopters of corneal astigmatism gone! The patient has retained his own cornea. There is no better cornea on the market than your own!

** Contact lens in the eye 😱 **

This is an intra-operative picture of a patient who had an Intraocular Contact Lens or implanted as she was unsuitable for . The patient was a -12 with a high degree of astigmatism. This is the reason why the ICL needs to be placed at a certain angle to successfully treat the astigmatism. The correct angle is all computer guided and extremely accurate.

After surgery the patient was seeing better than 20/20 without glasses and her life was completely transformed. From being legally blind to living free from the burden of glasses and contact lenses in a procedure that took less than 20 minutes to treat both eyes. The procedure is completely painless and as can be seen 100% bloodless.

I completed my corneal fellowship 13 years ago and my Refractive Surgery fellowship 11 years ago. I am still amazed and get a massive kick out of what we as corneal and refractive surgeons can do to transform lives for the better!

Yesterday I performed a corneal transplant on a 24 year old keratoconic with 6/120 unaided and 6/36 corrected vision pre-op. Booked in for a DALK somewhere else he saw me for a 2nd opinion. As I always tell patients; there is no better cornea than your own. He opted for CAIRS as he was an ideal candidate.

This morning at his Day 1 post op assessment he was seeing 6/9 UNAIDED already, pinholing to 6/6 easily! Man!! How amazing is vision correction surgery?
