Hi there for those of you that don’t know me I am Selena, founder and director of Essence Pilates.
Skip ahead if you already know my history but here goes, I have been married to my loving and patient husband Rod for over 30 years. We have the 3 most wonderful daughters in the world. Two you know or will meet shortly both here and in the studio and one who you will never see, pilates and exercise in general is just not her thing but we keep trying….
I originally worked as a Lawyer specialising in Family Law in both Sydney and Hobart and then after Lily was born I took a side step into Mediation. After moving around the country a few times we ended up in Perth and I decided it was time for a career change and in 2009 I started my training and teaching pilates. I worked as an Instructor until 2013 when I took over the studio in South Perth with my business partner Debbie. The vision we had for the studio way back then has changed a bit over the years with family circumstances and the Pandemic changing the way we do business.
Personally, I have continued to study pilates with various organisations, to expand my knowledge and understanding both of the pilates method but also the human body with all its quirks. What I love most is helping people either in a group setting or in private classes find the freedom to move their bodies in a way that enhances their ability to get through their daily life.
In my own life I have learned this past year that my body can do hard things if I ask it to, like completing a half marathon for the first time at the age of 56, which I hope to do again this year. Even though I have never enjoyed running, I have found that it has helped both my physical and mental health. I want to expand my exercise goals this year to include some more strength training. Professionally, my goal for this year is to learn more about how my teaching of pilates can help support our clients through changes in their lives, for example the role of supported exercise in the menopause process.
