YWAM Perth Primary Health Care School

YWAM Perth Primary Health Care School See how God wants to bring love and healing to the poor and needy through Primary Health Care!

There is a great need in our world for health care. 80% of the needs can be met through primary health care, but only 50% of the population has access to it. In this 6-month school, we learn more about God- His heart for His people, His heart for health care, His heart for those who are in need, and how He can use us to meet that need. We will have hands-on medical training, using The Eight Keys For Primary Health Care: food and nutrition, mother and child health, water and sanitation, essential drugs, health education, community resources, curative care and disease control.

The foundation of health care in missions is studying the character and nature of God. Setting our attention and focus on God as the foundation for our lives. We can see so many hard things in healthcare but without God being the centre we can get lost and overwhelmed. He is the reason and ability we have to serve people with deep care.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We partner with God to see people change in ways that our skills and knowledge can't. We can touch people's physical body's but God can encounter their mind, emotions, and spirit.

At the end of lecture phase we learned about the importance of child weighing and we practiced doing it.
The last couple weeks we've been part of children under five clinics and community outreaches and the first part of the day is spend child weighing and then giving immunisations. If we see an under weight child we talk to the mother about weaning foods and if a child has been sick how we should feed them.
It's been a very powerful time getting to pray for so many mothers and children.

“And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.” Mark 10:16

While He walked the earth, Jesus showed us the value of caring for children and giving dignity to them; in places where children do not have access to fair or substantial healthcare, we can offer hope by treating them with counter-cultural respect. When we get to serve children in the nations – whether in clinics or schools – it opens the door for us to be able to educate and speak life to a whole family as well!

In weeks 6 and 7, we had Dr. Nick Kovosavich speak to our school about skin, eye and ear health; here he is demonstrating how to give an ear exam to a young child and then guiding our students to do the same!

A few weeks ago we had a clinic where our students practiced being primary health care workers with each other – they took vitals and talked through the treatment of different health concerns surrounding waterborne illnesses, making sure the patient knew what was happening. As a school, we value openly communicating with the people we care for because an informed patient is an empowered patient!

“We are all human beings, worth loving and caring for.”
Kathy Kennedy, teaching on Introduction to Primary Health Care

As the Primary Health Care School we believe that people are created in the image of God and, therefore, are deserving of compassion. In a lecture on the introduction to primary health, Kathy talked about how health care is a way to serve those who are overlooked or forgotten and to share the love of Jesus with them. By meeting a physical need, we get the opportunity to tell someone how God sees them and care for them the way He would. In whatever we do, whether we care for a wound or help someone with a fever, we want to remember that we’re always encountering someone who Jesus loves and died for, someone we should love too.

Children are more likely to live past the age of five years if they have clean water. In the Primary Health Care School one of the topics is water borne diseases, we learn how to identify diseases, bugs and what the best course of action is. The first thing is to continue giving the person clean water. We also learn about Oral Rehydration Solution, and how to build water filters to prevent contaminated water from happening.

Community resources.
When talking about resources sometimes we jump straight to finances, government structure, equipment and more. As a Godly community health care workers our biggest resources is the bible and people.
In the bible God talks about community development, cleaning water, hygiene, dealing with disease, and more. We want to partner with God to see the community and meet with them to address the needs they have. Community leaders are instrumental for seeing change and God’s presence coming into communities.

Jesus’ heart for the outcast.
Over and over we see Jesus approaching people who were unapproachable by society. The leopards he touched, the blind men on the side of the road, the Samaritan woman, and the bleeding woman.
Jesus drew close when no one else would and his compassion has shaped our response to the outcast and lonely.

Missions and whole people.
As health care workers that carry God’s heart, we want to be ones that come along side people. It’s not about numbers or results. It’s seeing and loving people right where they are at. Sometimes it means listening to how their last year has been incredibly overwhelming, it is sharing the message of hope in the gospel, and teaching them how to help their 5 year old with a cough. We want to work alongside them to see wholeness, healing, people equipped, and hope for their situation.

One of the continued largest needs is severe malnutrition, with over 45 million children affected around the world. This happens for a verity of reasons, cusps of famine, actual famine war and displacement. This can define how a child grows up, affecting their physical and mental development.
During our school we teach about weaning foods and good nutrition. We pray with communities for solutions for families to grow food, peace for countries, and home for people to be able to grow things again.

Our Story

There is a great need in our world for health care. 80% of the needs can be met through primary health care, but only 50% of the population has access to it.

The Primary Health Care School uniquely combines primary health care and God's heart for the poor and needy. This 6-month school offers training in essential health care that is easily accessible and affordable for communities.

You will have hands-on medical training, using The Eight Keys For Primary Health Care: food and nutrition, mother and child health, water and sanitation, essential drugs, health education, community resources, curative care and disease control.

This school is for anyone who has a passion for God and for helping the poor, whether you have previous healthcare training or not. Jesus wants to heal today, just as He did in the Bible, and He wants to use you to bring this healing!
