Tiredness is not always about low iron (and taking iron supplements might actually make things worse if you don't actually need iron)

It's not always diet, or exercise or sleep either...

But what often throws all of our healthy habits out of balance is prolonged stress.

It might start with a stressful event or a illness or a period of more intensity with work projects, moving house or dealing with big changes in your life...

and, yes, these are all things we have to face from time to time in life, but when we don't get a chance to come back to a healthy baseline, the stress can begin to compound...

and normalise too, so we may not even acknowledge to ourselves the impact it could be having.

Fatigue is just one way it might show up, and if you're low on energy and feel tired a lot of the time, its worth coming to see a naturopath for some support. 🌿

That might look like addressing nutrient deficiencies, personalised herbal formulations to address symptoms and help your body adapt and restore balance, making some changes to your diet or lifestyle that are manageable for you, or doing some testing to investigate symptoms or concerns you might have.

Have you ever heard of PANS? If you have younger children, it's something you might want to know about! 🤓

Naturopath Jade Blyth give us the low down:

Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) is a clinically diagnosed condition with the prominent indicator being the sudden onset of neurological and behavioural symptoms in children. These symptoms can include:

🔷 Sudden, dramatic development of compulsive behaviours akin to OCD obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms

🔷 Unexplained and intense anxiety, separation anxiety, or panic attacks where there hasn't been a previous history

🔷 Rapid mood swings, irritability, or significant changes in emotional state, including sudden bouts of depression

🔷 Regressing to behaviours typical of a younger age, such as tantrums, baby talk, or sudden loss of reading or writing skills

🔷 Sudden onset of nervous tics, involuntary movements, or sensitivities to sensory inputs like loud noises or bright lights

🔷 Problems with sleeping, including insomnia, frequent waking, or night terrors

🔷 Bedwetting, needing to urinate more frequently, or sudden onset of urinary incontinence

🔷 Significant changes in eating patterns, which might include food restrictions, sudden food aversions, or overeating

🔷 Unexplained joint pain that is not related to injury or physical activity

The exact cause of PANS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response that affects the brain, sometimes following viral infections or allergic reactions, or it may be triggered by other environmental factors.

Early recognition and intervention are crucial for understanding and managing PANS effectively. If a child exhibits a sudden onset of these sort of symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice from your GP.

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the child may need to work with paediatricians, naturopaths, neurologists, psychiatrists, dieticians, immunologists or a combination of these specialists to address the complex and multifaceted nature of PANS.

Usually a child with PANS will experience their symptoms resolving over a period of time with proper treatment in response to the symptoms. When not detected and addressed, children with PANS may experience longer term impacts on their physical, mental and social development with their education potentially also suffering.

Remember, many children do experience some of these symptoms from time to time, and the difference with PANS is the SUDDEN change and INTENSITY of the change. Many childhood developmental issues can be resolved with time, patience, good nutrition, and establishing healthy habits.

As a naturopath, Jade provides advice on nutritional and behavioural approaches and can prescribe natural herbal medicines to support your child through any challenges they may be experiencing.

Rashes, reflux, headaches, anxiety, fatigue, bloating, PMS… could they all be connected? 👀

In some people, histamine intolerance IS the missing piece of the puzzle... and unfortunately, it’s often overlooked.

At PNMC, we see people every week with chronic symptoms that no one has been able to explain. It's not always histamine related of course, but this can be one of the reasons these symptoms aren't responding to other treatments.
Often, once we support their histamine load, things start to shift.

Want to understand how histamines affect your gut, skin, hormones, and mood?

Together with allergy and gut health expert, Naturopath Sam Botica, we've created a free eBook to help you out:
💡 Learn the symptoms of histamine intolerance
🥦 Understand the hidden food triggers
🌿 Get our best naturopathic tips for lowering histamine naturally

It’s completely free — tap the link in our bio to get your copy and learn more about histamines now.

IS IT STRESS OR A STIMULUS? UNDERSTANDING HORMETIC STRESS

You might have seen us mention hormetic stress in last week’s post on wellness trends that can backfire. This week, we’re diving deeper into what hormesis actually is, how it can benefit your body, and when it might be doing more harm than good.

WHAT IS HORMETIC STRESS?
Hormesis is the idea that a small, intentional dose of stress can actually help your body become stronger, more resilient, and better at adapting.
This is where practices like cold exposure, intermittent fasting, sauna, HIIT, breathwork, and even certain plant compounds come in.

All of these can induce a mild, temporary stress response that stimulates healing, repair, and growth.

But only when your system is ready to receive the challenge.

BENEFITS OF HORMETIC STRESS (WHEN TIMED WELL):
• Improved mitochondrial and cellular energy function
• Enhanced circulation and cardiovascular health
• Better immune regulation and stress resilience
• Activation of repair and longevity pathways

Sounds great, right?
But there’s something important many people overlook...

WHEN HORMETIC STRESS BACKFIRES
If you're already feeling burnt out, chronically tired, anxious, inflamed, or stuck in survival mode, even “healthy” stress can feel like too much.
We’ve seen it with patients who try cold plunges, fasting, or sauna because they’ve read it’s good for them, but for many who are not in a good state of health they can feel much worse after some of these activities.

Hormetic stress is good for you. But it’s not always good for you.
It has to match where you are in your recovery.

THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME
At PNMC, we believe in working with your body, not pushing against it. That’s why we help you understand your current capacity before introducing stress-based therapies or strategies. Sometimes these tools are perfect to introduce at a later stage, once your system is stronger and more stable.

We support patients with:
• FSM (Frequency Specific Microcurrent) for tissue healing and inflammation
• IV nutrient therapy to replenish what’s missing
• Experienced naturopaths that expertly select herbs and supplements and customise treatments to your indivual needs
• Breathwork and meditation with Amanda in life coaching to practice these stress management tools
• Acupuncture with Randa to gently improve circulation and promote states of rest and relaxation (essential if we are wanting nervous system resilience)

ARE YOU READY TO BUILD TRUE RESILIENCE?
If not sure about whether certain kinds of fasting, sauna, or cold exposure is right for you then perhaps you're right to err on the side of caution. You can always try these things and see how your body responds. If you want help rebuilding your energy before adding in more intensive activites, we’re here to help.

Book appointments with our practitioners online at www.pnmc.com.au or call our team on (08) 9328 9233 to chat about IV and FSM therapies.

Social media has helped spread awareness about nervous system health, though ironically, it’s also one of the biggest stressors on your nervous system. 📱⚡️

Excessive screen time, social comparison, and constant notifications keep your nervous system in a state of hyper-vigilance, making it harder to drop into more relaxed states needed for your body and mind to rest and recover.

Nervous system dysregulation is also affected by:

🧠 UNPROCESSED TRAUMA – past experiences can have you habitually stuck in fight or flight, fawn or freeze. Unwinding this takes more than just an understanding that it happens – which social media has given us.

🔥 CHRONIC STRESS – Demanding workloads, WFH with no switching off, mounting financial pressures, and the intensity of family life can all take a toll.
🛑 Where can you set some limits or make rules for yourself to carve out more space to NOT be stressed?

🥗 POOR EATING HABITS, GUT HEALTH OR HORMONE IMBALANCES
Your nervous system is ALWAYS working to create homeostasis – when this isn't possible, the body adapts. Those adaptations help you survive, but over time they can compound, leading to nutritional deficiencies, all kinds of weird symptoms & if left for too long, chronic illness.

So how do you actually reset your nervous system?
Contrary to the many posts about the nervous system, for most people it's not as simple as ice baths, detoxes, better self care or just starting Yoga. 🧊🧘‍♀️

At PNMC, our practitioners offer holistic approaches:

✔️ Somatic Psychotherapy with Eddie – Identify core issues and process stress with awareness of the body.
✔️ Hypnotherapy with Amanda – Rewire deep subconscious patterns.
✔️ Herbal & Nutritional Support with naturopaths Val, Jade, Randa, Eddie, Sam and Lesley – Providing the foundational nutrients your nervous system needs.
✔️ Acupuncture with Randa – Directly targeting tension and supporting the body to more easily return to a relaxed state.
✔️ IV Drip Therapy – With a script from your GP, IV infusions with Alison provide fast replenishment of nutrients lost to chronic stress and illness.
✔️ FSM Therapy – Personalised programs calm the nervous system and support recovery using specific frequencies to rebalance the body at a cellular level.

✨ Healing your nervous system isn’t just about mindset or yoga or breath work. They can all be helpful but without addressing stress at its root and giving your body the resources to recover, they will be limited in their effectiveness.
