March Safety Month at Alinea is focusing on the risk of heat-related illness.
Even as summer begins to wind down, hot weather and heatwave conditions can still occur across many parts of Australia. Working or spending time in high temperatures can be dangerous, and heat-related illness can develop quickly and become life-threatening if not treated early.
Heat risk doesnโt only affect people in outdoor roles. It can also impact people working in warehouses, vehicles, enclosed spaces, and buildings with poor airflow or limited cooling. Older people, people with chronic health conditions, and those taking certain medications may be especially vulnerable during extreme heat.
Simple precautions can greatly reduce risk: staying hydrated, taking regular breaks in cooler areas, wearing light and breathable clothing, and recognising early warning signs such as dizziness, cramps, fatigue, or nausea.
Heat illness is progressive - being informed and acting early can make a critical difference, protecting yourself, your colleagues, and those you support both at work and in everyday life.
