If you’ve ever wondered whether your toddler needs a probiotic supplement — here’s the good news...

Most of the time, their breakfast can do the job beautifully.

I look for two things when it comes to gut-friendly toddler meals:
1. A natural source of probiotics — like plain yoghurt or kefir
2. A prebiotic fibre that feeds the good bacteria — like banana or oats

Together, these support digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function during a time when the gut is still developing.

You don’t need fancy powders or pouches. Just a few real foods, consistently.

What's your go-to breakfast spread?

Most of the time, gut issues can present with small signs that are easy to dismiss.

Not eating like they used to.
Not growing as expected.
Or constantly tired without a clear cause.

As a paediatric gastroenterologist, I don’t just look at symptoms — I look at patterns. How your child eats, grows, behaves, and copes from day to day.

If you’ve been quietly wondering whether something isn’t quite right, trust that instinct. Sometimes the smallest signs say the most.

Want help working out what to track or what to ask your GP? Feel free to send a question.

A healthy gut doesn’t always announce itself.

Most of the time, it looks like a child who eats with ease, grows with consistency, and manages daily life without constant crashes or complaints.

And if those patterns change?

That’s when it might be time to look closer.

The "perfect" lunchbox is one that supports steady energy, easy digestion, and less stress — for both your child and you.

As a paediatric gastroenterologist, I look at what keeps kids full, focused, and comfortable at school. That often starts with:

🤍 Balanced fibre and protein (to prevent blood sugar crashes)
🤍 Wholefood snacks (not just packaged “healthy” ones)
🤍 A lunchbox with compartments — for variety without overwhelm

And yes, excess sugar — even from well-marketed snacks — can absolutely affect gut symptoms and behaviour in sensitive kids.

You don’t need to overhaul their entire diet. But if lunch is causing tummy troubles or afternoon meltdowns — it’s worth looking at the pattern.

Most parents know that breast milk supports nutrition and immunity. But fewer people talk about the way it actively trains a baby’s gut — and even helps shape organ development in the very first weeks of life.

Breast milk doesn’t just feed the gut — it instructs it.

It carries live bacteria that help colonise the microbiome (including the liver), delivers probiotic strains designed specifically for infant digestion, and supports the early development of the gut–brain connection.

Every feed is helping your baby learn how to process food, regulate stress, and build long-term digestive resilience — even if it doesn’t always feel like it in the moment.

Seeing blood in your child’s stool can be pretty alarming.

But before you panic or scroll through pages of worst-case scenarios, pause.

Not all causes are serious, and many are treatable once properly assessed.

Bright red blood often points to the lower bowel, commonly from something like a small fissure (a tiny tear caused by constipation). Darker or black stool may suggest an issue further up the digestive tract and requires quicker review.

What helps most?
📌 Take note of what you saw
📌 Grab a photo if you can (your GP will thank you)
📌 Book a medical review even if it only happened once

Common causes I see include a**l fissures, cow’s milk protein allergy, and post-viral inflammation. Sometimes it’s a one-off. Sometimes, it’s part of a pattern. Either way, clarity comes from a calm, professional review—not guesswork.

If you're feeling uncertain and seeking answers, I'm here to guide you on your journey! Let's unravel those questions together in the comments below 👇🏼

We tend to think of gut health as something we address when there’s a problem—reflux, constipation, allergies, food refusal.

But the foundations of a healthy gut are laid long before symptoms show up—and often in the quiet, everyday moments of parenting.

And don’t get me wrong, it’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about creating the kind of environment where the gut can develop the way it’s meant to.

These habits don’t need to be big to be beneficial. And they don’t require drastic changes. So swipe through to see how you can start!

Many parents are surprised to learn that iron deficiency doesn’t just affect energy - it can also change how a child eats, digests, and behaves.

When iron is low, the gut lining doesn’t repair as effectively. This can lead to discomfort that makes eating unpleasant, even before a child can explain what’s wrong.

Over time, food refusal or aversions can set in, often with no apparent trigger. Behavioural changes are just as common, and tasks that once felt easy may suddenly feel harder. Children can seem more emotional, more reactive, or just not themselves.

Have you noticed any of these signs?

We often talk about probiotics and nutrition, but the gut’s earliest teachers are found in everyday moments we sometimes rush to clean up.

🍂 A bit of dirt from the garden,
🍂 Food picked up off the floor,
🍂 And time spent playing outside,
are all exposures that quietly support immune learning.

A child’s immune system learns through contact. It knows what’s harmless, helpful, and what to ignore. Over-sanitising that process may seem safer, but it can leave their immune system too jumpy later on.

So this is your reminder that gut health starts with a safe mess! How will you introduce a bit of mess into your day?

I often see children who have spent years on reflux meds without improvement, only to discover EoE was the underlying issue all along.

The earlier it’s picked up, the better we can manage it and protect feeding confidence as they grow.

If your child is anxious around mealtimes or avoiding certain textures, it’s worth pausing to consider whether something deeper is at play.
