Goddhas, you've got them resorting to flailing their arms about in an attempt to get the public to agree that you belligerent women need to be controlled and managed in birth. Call on the govt quick who we know absolutely ONLY does things in our "best interests". Do you know why the obstetric medical body are calling for "new laws" to stop the last independent support network that women can get?, because recently a woman on the East Coast successfully sued in civil court medical staff who did NON-CONSENTED vaginal examination during labour. It has set a Precedence. Informed consent is a Legal requirement and women in birth have BOTH medical and Human Rights not to be assaulted or abused in labour. And if you don't think that doesn't happen to women in the hospital system, then you will never understand why women are choosing to free birth and not engaging with the medical staff unless they need to. The obstetric board does not like independent midwives, independent birth workers, women to have any independence in birth whatsoever. Read the history of their inception and the pennies will begin to drop. Btw if you are under the impression that they know, understand, support normal physiological birth, you're as indoctrinated as they are by their training. They are specialist surgeons who are trained at surgery. And don't come at me about emergencies, 99.99% of the time, hospital policies and clueless practitioners on the physiology of birth are what causes emergencies. They panic and worry about protecting their registration not about You or your Baby. And the reality of it is when they have caused harm and/or injury, they get a slap on the wrist or it takes years and a lot of petitioning by women to get them removed from practice. The system protects abusive practices but they'll go after practitioners who actually do support women safely and lawfully. Ask any private midwife and I bet most have been reported at least once by hospital staff for doing their jobs Right!
So listen to women when they tell you they felt violated during labour and BELIEVE them. The women who choose to birth without medical support have educated and prepared themselves on all the risks, including the risk of death. And knowing that they wld risk death rather than engaging with the medical maternity system, then you have to ask - how s**t is the system at supporting women? But those of you still reading my essay know this anyway. ๐คฃ
And if you think Doula's who support free birth are to blame becuz of how they practice? You're an idiot. That 'inflencer' mama (may she rest in peace) did not die from a hemmorhage and her doula did not cause that. The MSN LIES to suit the agenda. Wake up already if CONVID didn't do it. Free birth is NOT ILLEGAL btw.
I do birth debriefs with women plus I am a volunteer committee member with the leading maternity advocacy group Maternity Consumer Network, where I assist with complaints cases. Not the "I didn't feel supported by the staff" type of complaints, but the "baby died because they crushed its skull during a force delivery" or the "syntocinon was turned up so much it caused fetal distress leading to an emergency C-section and baby died days later", or the "low risk pregnancy, spontaneous labour woman whose labour was sped up with drugs, ended with an emergency C-section and they had to remove her uterus because they couldn't stop her hemorrhaging", kinda cases.
So, do you think I'm passionate about supporting women to have a non-violent, human rights kinda birth and justifiably so?
Omgosh, so rant over. Thnku for listening to my TEDx talk ๐คฃ.
I do consults and education on your medical rights as part of birth planning preparation and support you in how to navigate the maternity system during your care. I also mentor Doula's and birth workers who want to learn how to better support their clients in this. I can also assist with putting in complaints and debrief births. This is how I hold space for women. X
