Last night I had the opportunity to handle a lovely Doberman for a breed lecture. An opportunity I am incredibly grateful for as handling a different breed is always a great experience for handling but also my physiology brain!

Thanks Zoe and Michelle for trusting me to handle the lovely Evie girl.

Finally!!!

Canine Exercise Physiology Talk.

It has been a long time coming however:

I will be presenting a Canine Exercise Physiology Talk with dates etc to be advised.

Topics I will cover:

Aerobic conditioning, interval training, fartlek and how to work programming: micro/macro training phases to prepare for competition and what is required for specific dog sports including show body conditioning and general fitness.

Basic conditioning such as fit condition, working condition and peak condition and how this relates to development along with body type and tissue types such as short twitch/fast twitch or slow twitch muscle fibre and breeds. I will cover different training principles including hydro and land based exercise criteria.

General body confirmation and biomechanics/ functional movement. My work is based on functional movement!

Understanding tissue: muscle fibre, connective tissue fibre such as fascia, ligaments, tendons, joint tissue.

Tissue recovery and management.

Exercise for body conditioning and how this is correctly done. This will cover how loading and compensatory patterns interplay with the body and exercise programming.

These topics are all topics I touch on within each consult for my Wellness Centre people.

This talk is for my Wellness Centre people only.

My show and performance people as you will already have a basis of understanding from putting your exercise programs into play along with tissue management programs walking the path of prevention and care.

Therefore if I am not currently treating for you/your dog this talk will not be suited for you.

If you are interested please feel welcome to pop your interest below or message me directly.

I will post further details soon!

Stepping out onto the trial ground.

It can be a big step, your first time on the trial ground.
Just remember, everyone trialling must go through this, and it is never as bad as we think.
Nerves pay a big part. This is something we will learn to cope with as we get more experienced. Some nerves are not a bad thing, and it is best not to fight them; just accept them as part of trialling and do our best. We need to focus on our dog and the sheep and forget who is watching and what they may be saying.
People may criticise, comment, and note good and bad points in the dog, but basically no one will remember the run later. We have all had trainwrecks, and focusing on them achieves nothing. We simply learn what we can from them and move on.
If things go bad, we retire and go home with work to do. This will happen even after years of trialling. We can train and train, but ultimately getting our dogs on the trial ground can bring issues we may not have been aware of.
The dog is going to react to noise, other dogs, people at the let-outs, sheep that are different than anything he has worked before, our nerves, flags and any number of things he will encounter that he does not see at home.
We need to observe how the dog copes with these issues and try to support him.
If the sheep are too much for your dog, the best course is to retire, something all of us will do over and over with young dogs.
As an encourage worker in WA, we are permitted five runs with a helper. The helper is there to advise and help guide you around the course.
Information for encourage workers is here. https://www.westaustralianworkingsheepdogs.com.au/getting-started/
Sheepdog trialling is a challenging sport, to say the least. We are constantly learning, adjusting, trying different things and trying to fix issues that appear regularly.
It can be heartbreaking, disappointing, and frustrating, but also exciting. We will have highs and lows, sometimes a lot of lows, but the highs can make up for them. It will take a lot of commitment, and sometimes we will feel like we are going backwards.
Every issue or problem we need to work on is a learning opportunity and will help us in our journey, which can be a long one. There is no end destination; we just keep plugging away. Different sheep will suit different dogs. We might have some great runs at one event, only to fail to get scores at the next.
It’s important to look at the big picture, the people we have met, and those who have helped us; the fun social catchups; sorting out difficult problems with our dogs; and progressing around the ground. Our first score, our first pen, and our first win, which can be a long time coming but is well worth the wait.
We need to look at it as a competition with ourselves, and it’s important not to compare our progress to others. This can be detrimental to our development as we all are on a different journey with different dogs.
As soon as you start trialling you will become more aware of what is required to progress with your dog on the trial ground. This is something you won’t learn at home.
Remember also that it is a sport; we need to keep it fun and not dwell on things if they go wrong. Maybe we had difficult sheep, the grounds were a bit tricky, perhaps we failed to read things correctly or gave the dog the wrong command. Once again this is something that happens more than people realise, even to the top trailers.
Many of us trial because it is difficult and challenging, but even small achievements can feel special.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about your run to whoever may be watching. People are happy to help and advise. Criticism is something we must learn to cope with, as it is inevitable but usually done to help, not hinder. So don’t get upset if someone tells you what you might have done wrong; this is how we learn. We might get conflicting advice, as there are many ways people deal with issues, but it can all be useful information.
But above all, look on it as a long and exciting journey with an unknown destination.

I absolutely love seeing my dogs under red light at night in other people's lounge rooms.

I have always been a huge advocate for laser, magnetic, relight therapy for 25 years!!!

I have very specific criteria for when, which type and how to apply red light, laser and magnetic etc therapy. However it is awesome to see my dogs receiving daily tissue management by their people so that when they come for treatment I can focus on soft tissue treatment for functional movement and work progress with a plan of exercise criteria, tissue management etc.

This post is about Hitting The Wall!

I still treat people who used to follow the World Marathon Circuit competing throughout Australia and International. They used to travel and compete for fun!

Three of them during competition got to the point of beyond tissue fatigue and mental exhaustion in high altitude, hot humid conditions and to the point where tissue damage started to take place. Liquifying of muscle is a short explanation of chemistry breakdown. They survived! Their bodies have never been the same since.

I am writing this as with our performance dogs we choose them due to drive. We nurture drive and performance from a young age along with choosing sporting preferences based on body type and natural drive.

I have beagles!! My tand & white bitch Melody was chosen specifically for performance as I find they work differently to tri coloured beagles. I nurture hunting drive in beagles from the get go with various games etc. Our sporting preferences are: tracking, barn hunt, sprint dog. Activities that use natural drive to hunt. For Melody her reward is to work again! I absolutely love this however I also manage this!

In January three dogs: hunting breeds had situations where kangaroos or rabbits broke onto their properties. They gave chase and as they are nurtured in drive/workability they gave chase until they reached point of fatigue. Glucose storage was depleted along with stored glycogen. Warm and humid conditions added to the fatigue so when they came back they were hot, tired.....and staggering as brain function had started to deteriorate.

Luckily for the dogs their people are well educated and understand correct protocol for cooling down and administering emergency care. Then reaching out for further help. This highlights drive not stupidity of people as these people are incredibly careful and thoughtful with regards to their dogs.

This post also can give thought to exercise protocol in relation to our dogs with sports and conditioning dogs appropriately.

Salti and Melody getting ready to have Sprint Dog fun tomorrow night!!

Tapering down day for Melody. Salti is running for the lovely Ash who is lure driver training. So she will get to have a go before she hopefully runs early April in trial (depending on ballot).

I taper down for Melody however Salti has a completely different body type so I would taper very differently. In fact some of my short course (sprint, short course triathlete's etc ) did not taper down pre event. Their bodies thrived on a different approach. Some of the dogs I treat that run lure coursing through out the year for comp. also taper as per body type.

Last night I treated both girls bodywork the focus on structural alignment along with Chinese medicine points. Today tissue work along with laser. Tomorrow tissue and infra red

I am very specific with regards to how I prepare body for dogs and humans! Along with tissue protocol pre & post run, flushing of tissue then tissue recovery for post event. Flushing lactic acid is again completely different to recovery protocol in order to prevent 48 hours soreness and keep body in working condition.

Thanks West Coast Dog Sports for giving the opportunity for both girls but especially for Salti to run tomorrow night!

The aim of pre & post trial prep is to set the body up for success to be fit and sound for competition long-term.

Best of luck everyone for The Western Classic this weekend!!

It has been a huge few months planning, treating & writing up body conditioning programs for dogs entered in confirmation, agility, OB, Rally, scentwork, sprint dog.

Looking forward to a great weekend!

All the best and don't forget to print your numbers (confirmation).

Don't forget if you are bringing two dogs for treatment etc I have a large travel crate (PP90) available for one dog to hang out in. Just bring your own cushion/vet bedding etc.

Yesterday I treated another young show dog who presented east west in front. I began his treatment from releasing his neck. The person who was helping handling him and was supporting his head could feel how much the neck release flowed through jaw then body. Infact she was amazed at how much jaw release impacted his whole front end.

Over the past few weeks I have had several litters or pups come for treatment. Two actually initially had retained canines and had Vet intervention. Following on they both then showed signs of front end ataxia and head tilt. Which affected whole body nervous system and immune system response.

Along with Vet care thankfully they were recommended treatment for their pups.

My focus was of jaw, neck, body then some specific conditioning exercises helped bring them back to happy, balanced healthy young dogs again. Now heading back to show training soon.

How jaw affects whole body is something to think about.

My background from initially surgically assisting in Dentistry, exercise physiology then working in medical predominantly with cranio reconstruction surgery patients (Neuro and plastics) has enabled me to understand how cranial release treatment process can have a huge impact with CNS and body. Especially for dogs during huge growth and development phases. We know that the lower jaw is the slowest growing bone of the body in dogs.

A quick post but a hugely relevant post to better understand how important cranial release work can be.

In recent time I have had conversations with people about Melody running Sprint Dog. This post is a summary of my perspective on getting her into physical working condition for this event. Which has been part of my plan since she was in growth and development phase.

On 29th October of last year Melody turned 4 years of age. As of November 1st I kicked off her body conditioning program to bring her body into work condition with the aim of her coming into work condition for Feb. Prior to this I had intentionally kept her fit but out of work condition so that I could follow my plan of bringing her in once she had physically matured. Then my plan following her first trial is to bring her body further into work condition by March which would ideally be her second Sprint Dog Trial. She will come into this trial stronger and better conditioned. I had purposefully not aimed for peak condition with the first trial. The big over all picture is maintaining body throughout long healthy life.

Salti on the other hand is completely different. She runs her body naturally in fit work condition and has done from a young age. Same breeder but completely different body types with the two girls. I studied Canine Nutrition so as to be able to support Salti by having a more in-depth understanding of
chemistry or from the mico nutrient element throughout growth and development and life stages, tissue recovery, tissue and body support etc. Again the big overall picture is a long, healthy, fit and active life for each of my beagles.

Each body is completely individual as to how it responds to nutrition, exercise criteria and life stages. Stick to your focus with your goals and knowing what is right timing for bringing a body into work condition or even peak body condition.

Enjoy!
