WIRF & King Edward Memorial Hospital Op Shop

WIRF & King Edward Memorial Hospital Op Shop Located on the lower ground floor of KEMH, the friendly volunteer run WIRF Op Shop stocks pre-loved clothing for babies and women.

All proceeds help our mission to support research for improved health of women, preterm birth and gynaecological diseases. The Women & Infants Research Foundation's (WIRF) Opportunity Shop at King Edward Memorial Hospital is a great place to grab a quality bargain or donate your nearly new baby and maternity items. Our Op Shop is located on the lower ground floor of the hospital near to the cashier. WIRF coordinates nearly 100 volunteers who work tirelessly to support the Foundation, the hospital and patients and Staff at King Edward Memorial Hospital. In addition to this, we have over 300 community knitters and sewers who make specialised garments for use in the hospital’s special care nursery, and comfort blankets for the oncology patients. Our Op Shop accepts pre-loved women's and babies clothing into a donation bin located outside the Op Shop. All donated, pre-loved items go a long way toward helping the patients of our hospital source much needed clothing for themselves and their babies, and assist WIRF to conduct essential research studies into women and infants health.

💜 On this World Prematurity Day, we reflect on the impact of preterm birth and the extraordinary resilience of the tiniest fighters among us.

Earlier this year, mum Katrina shared the story of her twins, Olivia and Kyle (pictured), born at just 24 weeks and one day. Weighing little more than a block of butter (just 600 grams each), they spent 89 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, fighting to survive through brain bleeds, heart complications, and the constant threat of infection.

Thanks to advances in medical research and care, Olivia and Kyle are now happy, thriving Year Two students, with no lasting medical complications. 💜
But sadly, not all babies born too soon are as fortunate.

That’s why today, on World Prematurity Day, we’re launching our Christmas Appeal to help give more babies the best possible start to life.

🎁 Your donation today will directly support vital research and healthcare programs that improve outcomes for women, babies and families.

Please, give the gift of life this Christmas.

🌍 World Prematurity Day - 17 November 2025 🌍

Today, we stand with the 1 in 10 babies born too soon, and the families and healthcare teams who walk that journey beside them.

This year’s theme, “Give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future,” is a powerful reminder of why our work matters.

Through world-leading research and innovation, WIRF is helping to reduce preterm birth and improve outcomes for babies who need specialised care. Every discovery brings us closer to a future where more babies arrive safely and thrive.

💜 In honour of this important day, King Edward Memorial Hospital will be lighting up in purple, joining other landmarks in Perth and around the world to raise awareness and show support for premature babies and their families.

Today, and every day, we are committed to giving every baby the best possible start in life.

A Bundle of Kindness 💖

We had the absolute pleasure of visiting the incredible, selfless community of Soroptimist Canning District alongside the lovely residents of Jacaranda Gardens Retirement Living in Canning Vale.

Together, these generous hearts rallied to help us fill our much-needed Baby Bundles- an effort that means the world as we prepare for the increased need over the Christmas period.

These lovingly donated items will directly support babies born into crisis during this time, and we are sincerely grateful for the compassion and care shown.

From all of us at WIRF and the KEMH Op Shop - thank you for being part of something so meaningful. 💝

"We never thought it would happen to us."
That’s what WIRF ambassadors Amy and Mike Hussey shared with Harper’s BAZAAR Australia in their moving feature on the impact of preterm birth.

We’re incredibly grateful to for shining a spotlight on the unseen struggles faced by thousands of families - and for highlighting the life-changing research being led by WIRF to change that story.

Preterm birth remains the leading cause of death in children under five worldwide, and even in Australia, 1 in 12 babies are born too soon. The journey doesn’t end at discharge - it continues for families long after they leave the hospital.

At WIRF, we’re working on some of the world’s most promising innovations in this space - from improving antenatal steroid therapy to artificial placenta technology - all to give more babies the best possible start to life.

Thank you, Harper’s BAZAAR, for helping us raise awareness, share hope, and push for progress. Read the full story in the October issue.

Every story shared brings us one step closer to healthier beginnings for all. 🌿

💜 November is NICU Awareness Month 💜

This month, we honour the tiniest fighters and the dedicated teams who care for them with compassion, skill and unwavering strength.

Every day in Australia, babies born too soon or too sick are cared for in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. These are places where lives begin, resilience shines, and hope grows.

At WIRF, we drive life-changing research, provide vital support services, and raise funds to ensure every woman, baby and family has the healthiest start and a brighter future.

Together, we can help give every baby the best possible chance.

The talented women from Boronia Pre-release Centre will be selling quality, hand-made products in time for Christmas gift-giving.
