WIRF & King Edward Memorial Hospital Op Shop

Located on the lower ground floor of KEMH, the friendly volunteer run WIRF Op Shop stocks pre-loved clothing for babies and women.

All proceeds help our mission to support research for improved health of women, preterm birth and gynaecological diseases. The Women & Infants Research Foundation's (WIRF) Opportunity Shop at King Edward Memorial Hospital is a great place to grab a quality bargain or donate your nearly new baby and maternity items. Our Op Shop is located on the lower ground floor of the hospital near to the cashier. WIRF coordinates nearly 100 volunteers who work tirelessly to support the Foundation, the hospital and patients and Staff at King Edward Memorial Hospital. In addition to this, we have over 300 community knitters and sewers who make specialised garments for use in the hospital’s special care nursery, and comfort blankets for the oncology patients. Our Op Shop accepts pre-loved women's and babies clothing into a donation bin located outside the Op Shop. All donated, pre-loved items go a long way toward helping the patients of our hospital source much needed clothing for themselves and their babies, and assist WIRF to conduct essential research studies into women and infants health.

Volunteer Spotlight: Barbara Jewell 🌟

For nearly 10 years, Barbara has been a cherished part of the WIRF volunteer family—bringing warmth, kindness, and a true sense of community to everything she does.

After recovering from a health scare in 2013, Barbara felt a calling to give back. 💛 ""I wanted to be of service to the community. I used to nurse babies in the physio and help upstairs in admin, then I moved down to the Op Shop.""

Now, every Tuesday, you’ll find Barbara at the Op Shop, sharing smiles, lending a helping hand, and interacting with new mums and babies. 🍼💖

✨ "I love being with beautiful people, popping into the café and gift shop to say hello to all the gorgeous staff and volunteers. Volunteering at WIRF gives me purpose, knowing I’ll be spending my day with lovely ladies and making a difference." ✨

Karen’s lifelong legacy brings comfort to babies 💜 🧶

In a heartwarming continuation of a century-old family tradition, enthusiastic knitter Karen is making a difference to families in need through WIRF’s Baby Bundles program.

Twice a year, in time for winter and summer, Karen donates meticulously knitted playsuits, as well as other baby clothes, and essentials like nappies, wipes, baby wash, wraps, and toys, all thoughtfully sourced to provide comfort to new mothers and their babies. She collects items throughout the year, purchasing them on sale or adding seasonal touches like Easter and Christmas-themed items.

Karen’s commitment to supporting vulnerable families is a legacy passed down from her nanna, who lived across the road from King Edward Memorial Hospital.

It was lovely to see Karen again this week with her special delivery.
From all of us at WIRF, thank you for helping us wrap these little lives in love. 💛

Since 2020, she has been the incredible force behind our Op Shop Store Room, ensuring everything runs smoothly. But for Patrice, the most rewarding part isn’t just helping patients and shoppers find quality pre-loved clothing—it’s the friendships built along the way.
