Ever stopped to ask yourself: is altruism real, or is it simply a way to fill our own need for approval?

I've been debating this with a friend recently who prides himself on being extremely empathic & living an altruistic life because he "always puts others first". But I wonder if our "selfless acts" are really about caring for others or about caring for our own need to feel safe, liked and worthy albeit at an unconscious level.

True compassion starts with self-love. True empathy asks us to hold space for ourselves first. I think it's out of that space that we can genuinely hold space for others. If we can’t honor our own needs, can we really honour the needs of others without having an ulterior motive? When I looked at my own life honestly, I was shocked to find the truth. And then I understood why my self sacrificing didn't often get the gratitude I wanted. Brené Brown says that we can't give to others what we aren't giving to ourselves. We can't give away what we don't own. 🎤
