Lead exposure doesn’t always show up right away... but over time, it can wreak havoc on your health.

Watch for these symptoms:

- Cognitive decline & poor memory – Trouble focusing or forgetting simple things.

- Fatigue & frequent headaches – Feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep.

- Learning challenges in children – Difficulty concentrating and retaining information.

- Skin issues & chronic inflammation – Eczema, rashes, or unexplained irritation.

Lead often hides in the bones, making it hard to detect with regular blood tests.

A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) can reveal stored lead and help create a targeted detox plan.

When you've tried the obvious things - more sleep, more water, less caffeine - and you're still exhausted, that's when it's worth digging deeper.

In clinic, I don't just look at one thing. I look at patterns.

How you're sleeping. When you're waking. What your energy does across the day. Whether there are signs pointing to blood sugar instability, liver congestion, or nutrient gaps that aren't obvious on the surface.

This is what a naturopathic consultation offers - the chance to actually investigate your fatigue rather than guess at it.

I'll ask questions your GP might not have time to ask. I'll look at your whole picture, not just one symptom. And together we'll figure out what's driving your exhaustion so we can support it properly.

No generic advice. No one-size-fits-all protocols. Just targeted, personalised support based on what your body is actually telling us.

Here's something most people don't realise about fatigue - it's not always about how much sleep you're getting. It's about the quality of that sleep.

In clinic, when someone tells me they're still exhausted despite being in bed for eight hours, I start asking different questions.

Are you waking frequently?
Do you hit a wall around 3pm?
Do you feel like you never quite filled the tank overnight?

These patterns tell me something important: you might be getting enough hours, but not enough deep sleep or REM sleep.

And that's where the real restoration happens.

One pattern I see often is frequent waking - particularly when blood sugar isn't stable overnight. This can happen when there's not enough protein at dinner, or too many refined carbohydrates during the day. The body wakes because it's looking for fuel.

Another thing I pay attention to is what time you're waking.

According to Chinese medicine, different waking times point to different organ systems. Waking between 1am and 3am, for example, often suggests the liver needs support.

That might sound unusual, but it gives me a direction to explore - are there other signs of liver congestion? Difficulty digesting fats? Nausea in the mornings?

This is how naturopathic investigation works. Symptoms are messages. Fatigue isn't just one thing - it's a pattern made up of many clues.

Save this for later if your tiredness feels like more than just a busy life.

Here's something most parents don't realise about supporting ADHD naturally.

There's an Ayurvedic herb called Bacopa monnieri that's been used for centuries to support memory, learning, focus and processing speed. Scientists became curious about these traditional uses and started studying how it might help children with ADHD.

The research is promising. Clinical trials showed real improvements in attention and cognitive function. But here's the catch that trips most families up: it needs time to work.

We're talking a minimum of 12 weeks of consistent use before you can fairly assess whether it's helping. The longer it's taken, the stronger the effects become. This isn't a quick fix, and I can't emphasise that enough.

What makes Bacopa particularly brilliant for ADHD is that it works on multiple pathways. It supports dopamine signalling, which is central to attention and motivation. It also helps regulate the stress response, which is why it's traditionally been used for anxiety too.

In clinic, I see so many kids where anxiety is actually fueling the inattentiveness and hyperactivity. When we can support both learning capacity and calm the nervous system at the same time, that combination can be a real game-changer.

Bacopa can also be taken alongside conventional ADHD medications if that's the path your family has chosen. It may even improve how well those medications work.

When fever strikes, these traditional herbs have been used for generations to provide comfort and support:

🌿 Yarrow – helps stimulate gut immunity, supports the body's natural fever regulation, and improves circulation
🌿 Elderflower – offers antiviral properties and acts as a gentle decongestant to help clear respiratory congestion
🌿 White willow bark – contains salicin (the natural compound that aspirin comes from) and can help ease discomfort
🌿 Rehmannia – traditionally used in Chinese medicine to clear heat from the body and support immune function
🌿 Rhubarb root – used in some herbal traditions to help reduce inflammation and excess heat
🌿 Peppermint – naturally cooling and soothing, making it easier for children to accept herbal preparations

These herbs work by supporting your body's natural processes rather than suppressing them - helping you feel more comfortable while your immune system does its work.

Important note: Always consult with a qualified herbalist before using stronger herbs, especially for children. Professional guidance ensures the safest and most appropriate approach for your family.

It’s easy to assume that probiotics are always a good idea, especially when we hear so much about gut health.

But when it comes to breastfed infants, adding probiotics too early can sometimes disrupt rather than support their developing microbiome.

Here’s why:

Breast milk is a living ecosystem - it already contains beneficial compounds and natural prebiotics that feed your baby’s own native bacteria.

When you add probiotic strains, you introduce non-indigenous bacteria that can compete with the flora your baby’s body is designed to grow.

That’s why for most healthy, breastfed babies, probiotics aren’t necessary, unless recommended by a practitioner who understands infant microbiome health.

Breast milk is nature’s probiotic, perfectly balanced to help your baby’s gut, immune system, and nervous system develop in harmony.

This quote from Dr Kerry Bone is something I wish every new client understood before they started treatment:

"Herbs don't force change - they subtly teach physiology to remember how to function. Their intelligence is quiet, cumulative, and best revealed not in moments, but over months or even years of consistent application."

Herbal medicine isn't fast. And that frustrates some people.

But here's what I've seen over 20 years in practice: the things that work quickly usually don't last.

And the things that last usually don't work quickly.

When I prescribe herbs for IBS, hormonal issues, eczema, or burnout, I'm not suppressing symptoms. I'm retraining your body to function the way it's designed to.

And that takes time.
Consistent, patient, steady application over months.

But when it works?

It changes the underlying pattern, not just the surface problem.

If you're working with herbs right now and feeling impatient, give it time. Your body is relearning.

Here's something most people don't realise about extreme bloating - it doesn't always start in the gut.

In clinic, I'm seeing a really interesting pattern in clients with severe, stubborn bloating. When we test, we're finding high levels of oral bacteria living lower in the digestive tract where it absolutely should not be.

This is a common finding in SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), and here's how it happens:

We swallow about a litre of saliva every day. That saliva carries bugs from our mouth and sinuses. Normally, strong stomach acid neutralises them before they travel further. But when stomach acid is low or the bacterial load is too high, those bugs make their way into the small intestine - and that's when the bloating becomes relentless.

Here's the good news: once we understand what's driving it, we can actually address it properly.

For these clients, treating the gut alone isn't enough. We need to treat the mouth, the sinuses, and support stomach acid production. Otherwise the problem just keeps coming back.

Simple strategies like using a nasal rinse or spray with antimicrobial essential oils, and seeing your dentist regularly, become genuinely powerful tools for digestive health.

Save this for later if you've been chasing bloating answers and nothing has stuck.

Ever wondered why your friend can have an espresso at 9pm and sleep like a baby, while you have one cup at breakfast and feel wired all day?

It's in your genes.

Your body breaks down caffeine using an enzyme called CYP1A2, and depending on your genetics, you're either a fast, intermediate, or slow caffeine metaboliser.

👉 Fast metabolisers: Process caffeine quickly, get good energy, feel great

👉 Intermediate metabolisers: Need to time their coffee intake (usually before 11am)

👉 Slow metabolisers: Feel jittery, anxious, can't sleep even from morning coffee

If you're curious about how your body processes caffeine (and a whole lot more), we can actually test for this.

I use genetic testing in clinic to help clients optimise their diet, lifestyle, exercise, and even toxin exposure based on their unique genetic makeup.

It's a simple cheek swab that can be a real game-changer.
