Established in 2012 with a desire and passion to confront key Mental Health issues through the vessel of sport. FRESH discovered a limited and exhausted supply of resources in the Mental Health sector for Indigenous, Maori & Pacific Island communities which sparked a need for an intervention.
With this in mind, FRESH established itself as a Sports Club and focused to commit an outreach for these communities, through our Sporting programs and teams. Since 2012 this service has presented opportunities to access and impact communities within the Maori & Pacific Island groups through our Rugby based teams. We have managed to establish a firm foundation for interaction and provide valuable support networks across ages 8 to 18 years and with a healthy number of Men & Women also involved.
FRESH focuses on key areas but not limited to extents such as:
Fellowship: We encourage interaction amongst all our members, to develop a network of support system. Stats show that 3 million Australians are living with depression or anxiety or on average of 1 in 6 Women and 1 in 8 Men experience some level of depression. So we feel with regular interaction through trainings, fundraising activities and events creates a special bond and relationships are sure to have formed, providing a support network for all.
Counselling: Experienced coaches and mentors are beneficial in this area of focus for FRESH as we really aim to target awareness for Teenage Su***de prevention. This rate is of major concern as stats from 2015 indicate its highest rate in the last 10 years with 12-17 year olds. So we feel often kids are carrying burdens placed on them from peers or society and the modern day pressures of social media that portrays unrealistic lifestyles by comparing latest fads, giving a false sense of recognition. So we discovered the use of sports as an outlet to vent their frustrations. With our counselling program in place through our management staff, we can hopefully identify and provide a safe network through regular interaction with all our members.
Guidance: Uncertainty amongst teens around the ages of 17-19 is often due to them concluding their schooling years. With personnel surrounding them with life experience gained through their own personal situations, having opinions at times can comfort those in doubt. Key personnel within our management are also equipped with great resources and a strong network of expertise to assist when required.
Physical development: With highly experienced and qualified coaches and trainers, our program promises to challenge each of our members to achieve personal physical goals. The physical demands of our training sessions are uniquely designed and individually established to offer a balance to counteract a high degree of stress.
Spiritual: An area that is highly scrutinised through society, FRESH offers a place of acceptance as many members feel victimised through their religious beliefs. Although FRESH based and founded on its Christian principals, we are enthusiastic to show compassion and support to all our members.
FRESH’s goal is to reach all local Schools within the Perth Metropolitan area with a program on how to utilise Sports as a tool to encourage kids to speak up on Mental Health issues while also raising awareness. Designing and running programs/ events throughout the entire State of WA and in particular major Mining towns to showcase the impact Sports can have on improving and raising Mental Health understandings.
