It has taken a little over three years since I wrote this, but the mite we were hoping to keep out of Australia has now arrived on our shores.
If you have unkept hives on your property, it’s now time to do the right thing and ensure they are eradicated so as to not spread disease that had the potential to decimate the entire industry in Australia.
Tonight, we have attended a seminar from the department as to what the approach will be when the varroa mite reaches WA. The first step will be the complete destruction of every bee hive within a 10km radius - both kept and unkept hives, all in an attempt to contain the spread. It will be absolutely devestating.
On behalf of all beekeepers, if you do have a feral wild hive, please do the right thing to ensure the spread of disease is contained.
