🧘Why does this class look different?

This is Ashtanga Yoga and an example of the Mysore style of this practice, named after the beautiful city of Mysore in southern India 🇮🇳

Yoga Space’s Mysore program has been running since 2005, when Dr Jean Byrne and Dr Rob Schutze received teaching authorisation in this lineage. The Mysore mornings are currently taught by Authorised teacher Elena Pinto, GP-Yoga Teacher Tricia and Respiratory Scientist- Yoga teacher Eva.

So what is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga offers a dynamic and structured practice that follows a set series of postures, synchronised with the breath 🌬️

Sadly, the Instagram version of Ashtanga often focuses on extreme postures and extreme adjustments. Maybe that’s fun for some, but it is not the heart of this practice. Also there’s been too many abuses of power in ASHTANGA to teach this way 😳.

Ashtanga gives you the opportunity to develop a daily practice and cultivate self-discipline (tapas 🔥). For our teachers and students, it becomes an anchor throughout all stages of life.

No matter what stage you’re at, everyone is welcome, this practice can be customised to suit your individual needs 🤍

Yoga friends are such lovely friends 🧡

When we get steady in practice, especially in one place, we meet people who forth share our values and support us on the journey.

We love this about our challenges and community events — you start to see the same faces consistently. Then say hi, then chat, then coffees.

Love the connections and friendships from YS. Did you meet an awesome person at YS? Tag them here. 🥰

Thanks to our community, all the teachers and students are kind, gentle and curious.

It is why we are still open 20 years later ✨

Love Jean

Practising online can seem strange at first...
but it can actually be more convenient. ✨

We have a HUGE online community — , here is practising from Indonesia, while other students are joining from around Australia, Singapore, Europe and more. 🌏

You can keep your camera on or off, which can feel less intimidating than attending in person.

Questions are always welcome, and you don’t have to worry about interrupting the teacher like you might in the studio. 🏡

Our immersions are playful and supportive. It is a relaxed online environment, and when class finishes, you are already at home!

With the Zoom link sent directly to your email, you can join on any device and practise with us from anywhere in the world. 💻

We often talk about Boundaries
Why? Because we live in a society that demands more than it is possibly for us to give. And often, it is women giving, giving giving, until they are exhausted.

Our May Challenge invite you to draw a line and see what happens when you being to prioritise your practice. But if you find it hard giving yourself the love you give others, maybe start here with these reflections on boundaries.

Here Dr Jean Byrne talks about Boundaries. In this neoliberal society there is so much pressure to do more and be more.Sadly it’s often the most compassionat...

Finding your “no” can feel uncomfortable at first 🧡

Especially when guilt shows up the moment you put yourself first. So many of us were raised to believe being “good” meant saying yes, keeping the peace, and carrying everyone else’s needs before our own.

But boundaries aren’t selfish — they’re a form of self-respect. They create space for the things that actually matter to us and help us live more in alignment with our values ✨

The way people talk about boundaries can get a little problematic, and we don’t advocate for just cutting people out of your life without explanation - unless there is harm. But we do encourage you, if you are a “yes” person and a chronic people pleaser, to consider finding your “no” for a while, so you can start saying “YES!” to what matters to you and your community.

In yoga philosophy, we often talk about the samskaras (patterns and conditioning) we carry through life. Sometimes guilt around boundaries is part of that conditioning. Awareness is the first step to changing it 🌿

The people most uncomfortable with your boundaries may have benefited from you having none. And while that can feel hard, it also reveals a lot.

Boundaries protect our needs and help us build healthier relationships.
