Sometimes, our emotions feel like stormy seas… and other times, like still, glassy water. Both are valid. Both are part of being human.

This morning, I stood at the end of this peaceful jetty and thought about how emotions—like water—can reflect what’s beneath the surface when we pause long enough to really look.

In my therapy practice, I offer a calm, compassionate space to explore whatever waters you’re navigating—whether you’re in the thick of the storm or searching for stillness. If you’re ready to begin your journey, I’m here. Enquire via the website: www.mindandmatters.com.au

I am a psychologist. Want to know more about me? I am also a mother, a stepmother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a sister, a friend, a lover, a dancer, a learner, a widow, a survivor, and a healer. These are all parts of who I am.

If you would help to understand your “parts” and heal them from any pain, please consider reaching out:

Do you or someone you love struggle with your mental health? Please consider talking to a qualified therapist. My name is Francine, and I am a registered psychologist working in my own private practice Mind and Matters Psychology at a new location in Warnbro. The office is behind my house, so it is very private. I do not bulk-bill but if you go to your GP first and ask for a mental health care plan and referral letter, you will then be able to access the Medicare rebate. All enquiries and bookings are through the website: www.mindandmatters.com.au

Let’s talk…
We like to think that times have changed but realistically, there are still many barriers that prevent people from accessing mental health support, such as stigma, cost, difficulties explaining the problem, and having a preference to be self-reliant. If you think of any other barriers, put them in the comments and I would be happy to respond by DM.

Let’s talk about ‘stigma’ – the feeling of shame or disgrace, embarrassment. Mind and Matters Psychology is located at a private residence, so it just looks like you are visiting a friend. Nobody knows why you are there, except you. The room is a beautiful, calm space where you can feel comfortable and safe to speak confidentially about anything without feeling judged.

Let’s talk about ‘cost’ – the APS (Australian Psychological Society) recommended fee is $300. At Mind and Matters Psychology the fee is $230 to make it accessible to more people. If you go to your doctor and ask for a mental health care plan and a referral letter, you can also access the Medicare rebate of $93.35. We process that rebate on your behalf to make it more convenient for you. We all tend to think that we have other (more) important bills; however, seeking professional help, engaging in self-care activities, or doing things that make you happy are all worthwhile ways to spend money. You deserve to feel good and function well in the world.

Let’s talk about ‘difficulties in explaining the problem’ – many people feel unable to identify or explain why they feel the way they do. They know they need help but have no idea what to say. At Mind and Matters Psychology, Francine knows how to gently ask the right questions to get to the issue. You don’t need to know what’s wrong yet, let’s just talk until we work it out together.

Let’s talk about ‘having a preference to rely on myself’ – lots of us like to be self-reliant and this is often a way of coping with a history of other people not being available or supportive to you; you had to learn to be fiercely independent to survive (physically or emotionally). Self-reliance is certainly a strength in some circumstances, but sometimes damages the closeness of your relationships, friendships, and limits your feeling of belonging with others. Seeking help can help you understand yourself better and increase your self-belief. You don’t have to do this alone.

Remember, you are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

What is Mental Health?

Mental Health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and act. At times, life can feel like a whirlwind of emotions, thoughts, and challenges.

Why Consider Therapy?

• Understanding Yourself: Therapy provides a safe space to explore your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. It helps you gain insights into patterns and discover healthier coping mechanisms.
• Managing Stress: Life’s stressors can take a toll on mental health. Therapy equips you with tools to manage stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.
• Improving Relationships: Whether it’s family dynamics, friendships, or romantic relationships, therapy enhances communication and emotional intelligence.
• Healing Trauma: Addressing past traumas allows for healing and growth.
• Self-Compassion: Learn to be kinder to yourself, build resilience, and foster self-acceptance.
