Do you know what happens if you were to receive a bite from the Blue Ringed Octopus? - the venom blocks nerve signals throughout the body, causing muscle numbness. Other symptoms include nausea, vision loss or blindness, loss of senses and loss of motor skills. Ultimately, it will cause muscle paralysis—including the muscles needed for us to breathe, leading to respiratory arrest. There is no known antidote, but victims can be saved if artificial respiration is started immediately. New Focus First Aid training can prepare you for the worst of what this little cephalopod has to offer. Find us to book your next first aid course @ https://newfocusfirstaid.com.au/

One of the five reasons why pressure immobilization technique is so critically important. If you are bitten by one of these, pressure around the extremity will help slow the movement of venom so it doesn't spread to your circulation. Are you, or is someone you know at risk of anaphylaxis to insect stings?
Allergies to venom from stinging insects (bees, wasps and ants) are one of the most common causes of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in Australia.
The most common causes of severe bite and sting allergy in Australia are:
• Bee sting (honey bee and native Australian bees)
• Wasp sting (paper wasp and European wasp)
• Ant sting (jack jumper, green-head, bulldog ants)
Other insects such as ticks, caterpillars, March flies and even bedbugs can trigger anaphylaxis but are less common.
Individuals at risk of bite and sting anaphylaxis should wear a medical identification necklace/ bracelet and have an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis and an adrenaline injector close by. Like food allergy, there are several actions or strategies that can help reduce the risk of a bite or sting but we can never make an environment risk free. If we know someone is at risk of bite or sting anaphylaxis we must always be prepared for an emergency situation.
There is immunotherapy available for bee and wasp sting and jack jumper ant. Please ask your allergist about this treatment.
For further information about bites and stings, and strategies to reduce risk read our help sheet: http://ow.ly/U6x550F6ZDd

Have you got your ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis Z-card?
A Z-card (easy folding, compact and sturdier) version of the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis (RED) 2020 for EpiPen®.
The Z-card also includes administration instructions for using an EpiPen® and a Travel Plan for people at risk of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) on the back. Please note that ASCIA Action Plans are medical documents and should be completed and signed by your medical practitioner.
It is important to regularly practice with an EpiPen® training device so that you are prepared if an emergency occurs. We recently came across a great tip for practicing with the training device – a Twitter user suggested to keep your EpiPen® training device in a kitchen drawer so that you can practice administering the EpiPen® while you wait for the kettle to boil!
The EpiPen® training device does not contain adrenaline or have a needle.
We recommend that you wrap some coloured tape around the trainer EpiPen® so that you don’t confuse it with the actual EpiPen®. REMEMBER: Never store/keep your EpiPen® Trainer with your EpiPen®/s
Anaphylaxis is a life threatening emergency. One of many important things to learn during a first aid course is "what it is" and how to deal with a anaphylaxis emergency. Familiarization with an Epipen and how to use them safely is critically important. Remain calm, position them correctly, look after your patient and call for medical assistance promptly. New Focus First Aid will give you all the preparation you need to be more confident with this situation - Book your first aid course https://newfocusfirstaid.com.au/

Chest pain? 😖 Altered level of consciousness? 😴 Difficulty in breathing? 😮💨 Uncontrolled bleeding? 🤕 Don’t drive yourself to hospital or the local ambulance station! 🏥
That’s the message our regional paramedics are reminding their communities to ensure patients get the best care possible. The humble countrysiders often have a mentality of not wanting to inconvenience the hardworking paramedics in their regions by calling for help, but this mindset, although with good intent, could be hugely detrimental to the outcome of the patient.
By calling Triple Zero (000) in the first instance, our Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) can immediately begin giving first-aid advice while simultaneously organising a paramedic and wider health response. Once on scene, paramedics can commence advanced out-of-hospital treatment, including administering clot-busting drugs for heart attacks.
By driving yourself to hospital to seek treatment, you risk being distracted behind the wheel as well as the danger of suddenly deteriorating and harming yourself or others. Not only is crashing a possibility, but you may suddenly need urgent help on an unfamiliar or difficult to locate road.
All these reasons are why paramedics urge residents to not be shy or intimidated about calling Triple Zero (000) for high risk factors such as chest pain. Calling Triple Zero (000) will be your best option! Whichever pocket of Queensland you may be in, our rural paramedics are ready to respond 24/7.
