Aged Care Community & Home Support Services

These services are focused on the strengths and goals of our clients. We’ll be working with you to encourage healthy aging. The approach we take is known as ‘wellness and reablement’ and there is a strong evidence base behind this being the most appropriate way to provide supports. This approach to intervention has long been core to the training and practice of Occupational Therapists.

Wellness refers to the state of being in good physical and mental health. It encompasses the whole person and is concerned with the prevention of illness and promotion of a high level of well-being. We look to enable clients to participate in meaningful and purposeful activities or occupations.

Reablement refers to the process of helping a person to regain their independence and abilities following natural aging, illness, injury, or disability. It aims to improve physical, cognitive, and social skills, and to support you in your recovery and rehabilitation. The goal of reablement is to enhance quality of life and increase ability to participate in everyday activities.

Our OTs are currently supporting clients with:

- Home Modifications
- Assistive Technology
- Mobility Aids

Distractibility is curiosity! Impulsivity is creativity! Hyperactivity is energy!
Did you know OTs can provide support for ADHD?

The three types of ADHD are:
1. Hyperactive/impulsive: fidgeting, restlessness, impatient, blurting thoughts.
2. Inattentive/Distractable: forgetfulness, distractibility, difficulty in listening and following a conversation.
3. Combined: This is the most common type of ADHD, and is characterised by symptoms of the two types listed above.

If you'd like to learn more about how OTs can support ADHD, comment 'ADHD Superpowers' below and we'll send you our free printable resource. Contact our admin team if you'd like to book an appointment as we have zero wait times for paediatric, adolescent & adult supports in our Torquay clinic!

Very exciting to see Anita Major-Brown from Thrive Rehab and the Cliterate Model featured in this news article last night! We have been lucky to have Anita deliver PD to our team on S*x & S*xuality over the past few years and to have our very own Cliterate model on hand too! We'll use this and many other models to support our clients' learning in our WHR S*x Group which kicks off next month.

Check out the article and learn more about how the Cliterate Model came to be, here:

Largely overlooked by medical science for centuries, these women set out to advance the knowledge of the cl****is.

Our S*x Group is back in Torquay! 🎉
Every Tuesday from 2 July - 20 August 3:30 - 5:30 pm

WHR S*x Group = S*x, S*xuality & Relationships Education
Here at WHR we recognise all people as s*xual beings and we are passionate about building capacity in this area, where our clients tell us it's important to them! 💗

Besides our clients telling us this is an area of importance did you know...
👉🏻Family Planning NSW reported in 2019 that just 38% of young people with disabilities received comprehensive s*x education, versus 55% of their non-disabled peers.
👉🏻The Australian Human Rights Commission found that people with disabilities are twice as likely to experience s*xual abuse, with 90% of women with intellectual disabilities reporting such abuse.
👉🏻Social stigma has created barriers for people with disabilities in Australia, according to The Attitude Foundation's 2018 report, 67% of people with disabilities perceive societal attitudes towards their s*xuality as negative.

These statistics highlight significant barriers that people with disabilities in Australia face and emphasise the need for targeted support and education! To learn more about our program visit our website: http://whralliedhealth.com/s*x-group

We still have a few spaces available in the group. If you'd like to refer, please get in touch with our admin specialists!

13/05/2024

Intellectual disability is a condition characterised by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. It affects approximately 1-3% of the global population.

Despite its prevalence, there are many misconceptions about intellectual disability. One common myth is that it is a rare condition, when in fact, millions of people worldwide are affected. Another misconception is that individuals with intellectual disabilities cannot lead fulfilling lives or contribute to society, which is entirely untrue!

Our OTs support clients with Intellectual Disability to achieve their goals for everyday living, whether it is activities at home or out in the community, we enjoy supporting people to increase their independence and do the things they need to do, want to do or are expected to do.

Referrals are open now! Contact our friendly admin team or fill in a referral form on our website whralliedhealth.com (http://whralliedhealth.com).

Riding the wave of Mental Health Week 🌊

Surfers, wave riders, shredders, and frothers know how good it feels to catch a wave 🏄‍♂️, but did you know there's a heap of information out there providing evidence on the benefits of surfing? 🌞

Particularly for one's mental health, research shows surfing can help improve self-esteem, reduce social isolation, and can even be used to treat depression and other mental disorders. 🧠💪

Many of our staff have surfing listed on their mental health care plans. What this means is that they know this is an activity they can do that makes them feel good and supports their mental, emotional, or physical well-being. With surfing, it's all three! 🌊❤️🌞

What activities do you do to support your mental health and well-being? Share in the comments! 🤗

If you're in the Surf Coast region make sure to check out the Art of Minds Festival! https://artoftheminds.org.au/

The office banter kicked up a notch as our competitive team stepped their way through the month. We also had several sunny days with renewed enthusiasm for and ensuring our WHR Garmin Watches were charged at all times! We'll be announcing the winners in our stories so stay tuned! 📢🏅

I've been working hard on providing animal-assisted therapy supports with my handler - Melissa (OT), in our WHR Albury Office on Dean street. Mel is my favourite person and she has done a lot of work researching, documenting and creating policies and procedures so that I can help support our clients to feel safe, regulated and motivated during OT sessions which enhances therapeutic outcomes! 🐶📚✨ I also enjoy long naps in the warm sun shining into our WHR offices... but back to my announcement. ☀️🐕

Look out pup-arazzi! 📸🐶
