Public Member Needed - Join the NSPR Registrations & Licensing Committee

The Nova Scotia Pharmacy Regulator (NSPR) is seeking a public representative to join our Registrations and Licensing Committee. Please consider putting your name forward today – your participation matters!

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗨𝗦

The Nova Scotia Pharmacy Regulator (NSPR) is the organization that regulates pharmacy practice in Nova Scotia. We work on behalf of all Nova Scotians to license and regulate pharmacy professionals and the community pharmacies where they work.

The NSPR is established by the Pharmacy Regulations under the Regulated Health Professions Act. Its legislated mandate is to ensure the public receives optimal care from the profession, with a sole focus to serve the interest of the health and well-being of the public.

We uphold the following organizational values:

• We believe that everyone deserves quality pharmacy care.
• We put equity at the core of what we do to address disparities in health access and outcomes.
• We collaborate with the public, pharmacy professionals, and our health system partners because learning with, from, and about others makes us all better.
• We adapt with the evolving health needs of the public so that we are doing the right work.
• We act with humility in everything we do.

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗟𝗘

Public representatives play a crucial role in ensuring accountability, transparency, and public interest representation on our committees.

The Registration and Licensing Committee reviews applications and makes decisions on applications for registration and licensure when requested by the Registrar, including determining if applicants meet the necessary qualifications and criteria to practice pharmacy in Nova Scotia. The Committee consists of both registrants and public members and will meet online when a referral is made to the Committee by the Registrar.

The NSPR is pleased to provide honorariums for all committee members as per the NSPR Expense Reimbursement and Honorarium Policy.

The NSCP is honoured to receive the 2025 Fred T. Mahaffey Award for our contribution to the regulation of the practice of pharmacy.

In response to increasing concerns by pharmacy professionals in Nova Scotia about their workplace conditions, in 2019, the NSCP began exploring how pharmacy regulators could intervene.

After reviewing research and literature on staffing levels and speaking to practitioners in Nova Scotia, the College launched the Staffing and Workload Initiative for Safety and Effectiveness (StaffWISE) project.

Over the past five years, the NSCP worked with Davis Pier Consulting to develop its StaffWISE Staffing Score, a robust, evidence-based, data-driven regulatory indicator intended to enable the NSCP to ensure that Nova Scotia community pharmacies have the staffing needed to consistently deliver quality services in a way that can be sustained by pharmacy professionals.

The NSCP will use the findings of the multiyear project and the StaffWISE Staffing Score to set and enforce minimum staffing levels in Nova Scotia’s community pharmacies. The findings can also be used by pharmacy managers and owners to help understand and improve pharmacy operations.
