I am working lots right now in my role as a first responder... however I would like to offer up pay-what-you-can virtual birth planning services (and possibly even virtual labour support via facetime/phone/Skype/text) to a few new parents who may be feeling *especially* vulnerable about this on a case-by-case basis. Just inbox me.
For example if you know a birthing person who does not identify with the term “expectant mother”, and for whom these Covid-19 limitations are especially scary, have them inbox me.
I’m by no means an expert in gender issues (nor does that have to be the focus of this pay-what-you-can idea). It’s just that the overt heteronormativity of birth in general has me thinking of our community’s most vulnerable new parents. This is what started a virtual pay-what-you-can idea about 5 minutes ago. It’s the least I can do.
If you know a birthing person who’s intended birth partner is ill and birth is imminent? Inbox me. I could never replace a chosen birth partner in the history and bond they have with the birthing person, but having a tiny bit of ownership in creating a backup plan can help a birthing person feel empowered.
I am probably the most part-time/casual Doula that still considers themselves “active”. I have mostly been lurking on the fringes of the birth world, doing my first responder thing. As such, I don’t have a single client in March/April/May - so I can make some time.
“Dear Pregnant People...”
Dear expectant mothers,
We know you are feeling especially anxious right now. We recognize that being limited to one support person during your labour is very difficult. We also know you want a partner or support person with you for your appointments and we are truly sorry that we cannot offer that comfort at this time.
This is a very hard decision but one we must make to keep everyone safe, including you and your baby. We are doing everything possible to keep COVID-19 from entering the IWK.
Not being able to have your family or loved ones visit to meet your new baby right away is probably not the way you imagined your birth experience.
Please know that our teams are here to take expert and loving care of you and your baby. We will give you the attention and support needed as you welcome a new addition to your family.
