Northwood - Live More

Northwood - Live More We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada.

Northwood was created in 1962 as a way to provide help to seniors that were living in poverty. For some, it is a place to live but we also provide at-home solutions to help people age well in the community. Northwood has locations in Halifax and Bedford and provides homecare throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality and to some parts of Hants County. We have over 1,500 staff, 600 volunteers and over 5,000 clients at our locations and throughout the province.

Today, on International Nurses Day, and throughout National Nursing Week, we proudly recognize and celebrate the extraordinary nurses across Northwood and the world who provide compassionate care, comfort and support to our communities every day. It's also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale!

Nursing is more than a profession. It is leadership, advocacy, kindness and dedication in action. From long-term care and home care to specialized programs and community support, our nurses make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and families across Nova Scotia.

Thank you to all nurses for the skill, empathy and commitment you bring to your work each and every day.

A Day that Makes a Difference. Join us as we continue to celebrate National Caregiver's Month!

A few hours can make a meaningful difference for both caregivers and the people they support.

At Northwood's Adult Day Program, participants spend the day connecting, moving, creating, and being part of a community. At the same time, caregivers have space to rest, work, or simply take a break.

It’s not about “filling the day.” It’s about creating moments of connection, confidence, and belonging.

Spring has sprung at Northwood! 🌸

We were honored to welcome a talented Tibetan cultural dance group and musicians to our Halifax Campus for a special Spring Blessings performance. This celebration reflects themes of renewal, positivity and welcoming a new season.

Gesar Blessing Dance is a gentle and uplifting movement practice that brings together simple gestures, music and presence. It offers a space of warmth, connection and shared well-being.

The experience was beautifully complemented by live music featuring traditional Chinese instruments, including the p**a (a plucked lute known for its expressive sound), erhu (a two-stringed instrument often comparted to the violin for its emotional tone), and the guqin (a classical zither associated with calm and reflection).

Thank you to all the performers for sharing your culture, talent and kindness with us, it was a truly memorable and uplifting experience for our residents and staff. Seeing the smiles, engagement and joy from our residents was a heartfelt reminder of how meaningful these shared experiences are.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a time to recognize that mental health is essential to overall well-being at every stage of life, including for older adults living in long-term care.

At Northwood, this commitment is reflected in our nationally leading Therapeutic Mental Health Program, Seeds of Success, the first dedicated therapeutic program of its kind for mental wellness in long-term care in Atlantic Canada. This program supports older adults with complex mental health needs through compassionate, specialized care that prioritizes dignity, connection, and understanding every day.

Senior mental health care in long-term care settings is increasingly important as more residents live with conditions such as depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders. Programs like Seeds of Success provide structured, therapeutic support that improves quality of life and helps residents feel seen, supported, and valued.

As more seniors need mental health support, it becomes even more important for our community to come together to help.

If you are looking for a meaningful way to make a difference, consider supporting this work through the Northwood Foundation. Your donation helps ensure programs like this continue to evolve, reach more people, and provide the care that is needed most.

Caregiving often happens quietly in kitchens, living rooms, and long days that don’t have a clear end.

This May, we’re recognizing the caregivers in our community. The ones who show up every day with patience, strength, and care.

At Northwood, we see the commitment, the challenges, and everything in between. You play an essential role, and it matters.

This month, we’ll be sharing more about how we support caregivers through our Adult Day Program.

Pictured is Pat (wife and caregiver) sharing a quiet goodbye with her husband, Wally. While she can be assured, he is supported and enjoying his day, it’s the moment they reconnect - familiar, loving, and steady - that means the most.
