Optometrists see eye injuries every year from toys that aren’t age-appropriate. Those labels are based on real injury data, not how “ready” a child seems. Following age recommendations helps protect children's eyes from preventable injuries.

The Association of Optometrists of Nova Scotia recommends checking age labels every time, safer play means healthier eyes 💙✨

🎁❄️ Wishing you happy, safe holidays filled with joy and play.

Age labels aren’t optional, they’re a safety guideline 👀🧸

Toy age recommendations are based on real injury risks, including eye injuries, not on how mature or capable a child may seem. Small parts, projectiles, cords, and sharp edges can cause serious harm when toys are used too early.

The Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists encourages parents and caregivers to check age labels before buying or gifting toys, especially during the holidays. Protecting vision starts with safer play.

December is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month, and some toys are way riskier than they look 👀🎁

From sharp edges to flying projectiles, elastic cords, and small parts that snap or shoot off, these toys are some of the biggest causes of eye injuries in kids. A split second of play can turn into an emergency eye visit.

The Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists reminds parents and caregivers to choose toys carefully, check and follow age recommendations, and supervise play, especially during the holidays.

Eye injuries are preventable, vision is not replaceable. If an accident happens, see an optometrist right away 💙

The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) is working with governments to update optometrists’ scope of practice so patients can access safe, evidence-based eye care sooner. Provinces like Alberta and Ontario are reviewing additions such as YAG capsulotomy, SLT for glaucoma, and benign eyelid lesion removal, procedures already taught in optometry programs and performed safely in the U.S. and U.K.

“As the front line of vision health and eye care, optometrists are highly trained, regulated professionals who already provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of ocular disease,” - Dr. Allison Scott, President of CAO.

With long specialist wait times and gaps in rural and northern communities, allowing optometrists to provide these routine in-office procedures will reduce delays while keeping ophthalmologists focused on complex surgeries that require their expertise. Optometrists’ training and safety record strongly support this update.
