New Leaf Enterprises - Social Enterprise

New Leaf Enterprises - Social Enterprise We are a vibrant social enterprise that specializes in home decor, catering, & business services

New Leaf Enterprises was one of the first social enterprises in Nova Scotia. Our business centre includes a full kitchen operated by our staff and by our trainees. New Leaf offers catering services for businesses and organizations in the Halifax Regional Municipality area, and it allows trainees an opportunity to gain valuable work experience. Our dedicated and professional trainees run a cafeteri

a at the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, another at O’Regan’s Automotive Group dealership on Kempt Road and our very own New Leaf Café located at our Centre on Fielding Ave in Burnside. New Leaf Enterprises also offers direct mail processing services for several businesses, in addition to producing beautiful home décor products for retail sale. Services provided by New Leaf Enterprises also generate revenue, which is reinvested into our programs so we can help grow our capacity to help Nova Scotians with disabilities. Our Employment Support Program works with employers in the community and our clients to facilitate job training and subsequent employment within the labour market. This highly successful program for youth and adults has generated multiple employment partnerships both in the private business and government sectors. New Leaf Enterprises is a pillar program of Easter Seals Nova Scotia. Learn more about New Leaf and Easter Seals Nova Scotia at www.easterseals.ns.ca.

🇮🇹 Good food, great company, and a little taste of Italy! 🍋

What a wonderful evening at our very first Shared Table event!

Guests started the evening in the kitchen, rolling up their sleeves to prepare homemade focaccia with their toppings of choice and making delicious tiramisu before heading into the café for an evening full of laughter, learning, and incredible food.

From fresh pasta and warm focaccia to creamy tiramisu, every part of the evening was delicious. Along the way, we learned a little about Italy, shared stories, and enjoyed plenty of laughter and great conversation.

Thank you so much to Gretchen and Abi for hosting such a fun and welcoming evening for everyone.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make our first Shared Table such a success. Stay tuned for the next one… we can’t wait to gather again!

Mariana Dardon Atherton became a participant in the Next Step Employment Program in May 2025 after completing the Achieve Program at NSCC. From the very beginning, staff were impressed by Mariana’s enthusiasm, positive attitude, and strong desire to gain the skills needed to pursue meaningful employment.

Mariana successfully completed an eight-week Culinary Prep Program, where she developed a wide range of culinary skills, including following recipes, food preparation, measuring, cooking, and kitchen safety. Through her dedication and hard work, she also earned her Safe Food Handler Certification. Following the program,

Mariana was hired at the Easter Seals Rehab Café, where she worked directly with customers, helped make our famous cinnamon rolls, and gained valuable experience in cash handling and customer service.

As part of the program requirements, Mariana also completed more than 30 hours of volunteer work at Northwood Halifax in the Forever Feast Café. Mariana’s confidence, enthusiasm, and natural customer service abilities were immediately evident — within just 15 minutes of arriving for her volunteer shift, she was independently managing cash transactions and customer orders.

Mariana was also a valued member of the first planning committee for Easter Seals Nova Scotia’s youth conference, Building Your Best Life. Over a six-month period, Mariana collaborated with fellow youth and mentors to help design, organize, and facilitate a one-day conference for youth with disabilities, created by youth with disabilities. Her contributions were instrumental in making this inaugural conference a tremendous success.

Getting to know Mariana over the past 10 months has been an absolute delight. Her energy, professionalism, dedication to learning, and outstanding interpersonal skills make her an ideal candidate for her new position with the Nova Scotia Department of Growth and Development, where she continues to develop new skills and become a valued member of her workplace team.

We wish Mariana every success in the future. Her professionalism, strong work ethic, positive attitude, and exceptional people skills will undoubtedly take her far.

Landon Arbeau joined The Next Step – Supported Employment Program for Youth with Disabilities with enthusiasm, determination, and a real willingness to try new things.

He quickly got to work at our café located at the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, where he impressed staff and customers alike. Landon set a record for learning how to make our famous cinnamon rolls in record time and consistently demonstrated excellent customer service skills.

When an opportunity opened up at Totally Raw Pet Food in Burnside, Landon was the clear choice. He has already made a strong impression and is thriving in his new permanent role.

Outside of work, Landon is a dedicated competitive swimmer with multiple medals at local and national levels. He also holds his National Lifeguard Certification and has a long history of community involvement, including volunteer work and his time as an Air Cadet.

Landon’s journey is a great example of what can happen when opportunity meets determination—and we couldn’t be prouder of what he’s accomplishing.

Today at New Leaf, the room was full of laughter, friendly competition, and a whole lot of movie knowledge.

Our clients took part in a fun game of movie trivia—testing their memory, sharing favourite films, and enjoying time together. Moments like these are what make New Leaf so special.

Every day, our clients come through the doors for meaningful work, creative expression, therapeutic programming, and connection. They are at the heart of everything we do—and today was a great reminder of the joy and community we’re building together.
