Nova Scotia is currently experiencing extreme heat and several active wildfires.

For people living with dementia and their care partners, these situations can bring added challenges, including changes in routine, unfamiliar environments, and communication or orientation difficulties.

It is important to have disaster and evacuation plans in place, and an emergency kit prepared. Being prepared ahead of time can help minimize stress and ensure safety. Some helpful resources during this time include:

Disaster preparation and response: https://alzheimer.ca/en/help-support/im-caring-person-living-dementia/ensuring-safety-security/disaster-emergency
Red Cross - Emergency and disaster services: https://www.redcross.ca/in-your-community/nova-scotia/emergency-and-disaster-services
Government of Nova Scotia - Emergency alerts and information: https://novascotia.ca/alerts/

For healthcare information and advice, please call 811. In an emergency, call 911.

To learn more about delirium and how to recognize the signs early, read our blog post here: https://alzheimer.ca/ns/en/whats-happening/news/world-delirium-awareness-day

Dr. Sam Searle, geriatrician and assistant professor at Dalhousie University, was a guest speaker for our AlzEd about delirium. You can watch the session on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxi-tsSH6CQ&list=PLJfRsWgBQnHxwYzHd8iVQwLnt5eGyejw4&index=5
