Back-to-school season rewrites everything. Routines, expectations, even how we see ourselves. For some, it can feel exciting. For others, it’s stressful. Most are somewhere in between.

It’s easy to get caught up in school supplies and schedules, but we’re here to remind you that this time of year can also be about connection and steadiness.

We pulled together some mental health reminders you might not have thought of. Head to the comments for the link.

Finding the words to describe grief can be tough for our teens.

When we offer them an opportunity to engage their imaginations and their hands, there is a sense of freedom to express what's truly in their hearts as they navigate the death loss of an important person in their lives.

Teens ages 13 to 17 are invited to join us for an inspiring grief peer support workshop. We are excited to partner with Chelsea Kitsch, Art Therapist (DKATI) to guide us in a creative project focusing on demystifying the grief experience, acknowledging our losses, and creating community through a sense of curiosity and respect (after a therapy dog visit and some yoga, of course!). No previous art experience necessary - all supplies are included.

Date: Sunday September 28 2025
Time: 230pm - 430pm
Location: Tantallon Public Library
Fee: $20 (financial assistance is available)

Registration in advance is required - space is limited to 8 participants. For more details, please see our website: www.berniesbuddies.ca/workshops

You are not alone in your grief.

Nova Scotia Health Palliative Care Service grief support group offers a compassionate and supportive virtual space to connect with others who are also grieving. Open to adults aged 18 and over, whose loved one received care through a Palliative Care Program, the group meets weekly for two hours over seven weeks on Thursdays at 1 – 3 p.m. from June 19 – July 31.

Before the group begins, each participant will have a one-on-one Zoom conversation with a facilitator. This is a chance to learn more about the group, ask questions and know what to expect.

To register or for more information, email: czbereavement@nshealth.ca or call 902-473-1622. You can visit https://www.nshealth.ca/clinics-programs-and-services/palliative-care-bereavement-program-central-zone for more information.

Grief n' Grindz - sounds interesting but what does it mean?

Grief is all the feelings we experience after someone important to us dies.

"Grindz" is a Hawaiian word that describes having delicious food together.

Grief n' Grindz is about children building community together through sharing our feelings about death loss while learning to make and enjoy a simple, nutritious meal with peers who "get it".

The Hawaiian people also have a special word for family: 'ohana. At Bernie's Buddies, we may not know each other at the beginning of an event, but by the end we are 'ohana.

Our very first Grief n' Grindz is for kids ages 7 to 12 at the Centre Burlington Hall on Saturday November 30.

Grief n' Grindz will be held once per month - each event will be held in a different location in West Hants.

Participation is FREE and registration is required by Friday November 22. Please see our website for more information and to register: www.berniesbuddies.ca/workshops

can be a complicated time of year — the pressure to fit in, to do well in school, and the balance of competing responsibilities is a lot for young people to carry.

That’s why KHP is here to listen 24/7, 365 as youth enter a new school year. We’re grateful to Desjardins for powering this back-to-school season and they are matching gifts of up to $50,000 for the month of September ❤️
