Terry Hunter, a personal trainer since 2005 and a certified Medical Exercise Specialist, established his own practice in Slim Gyms in Halifax. Medical Exercise Training bridges the gap between post-rehab and fitness, allowing the post-rehab client to further manage their medical condition. Terry has been providing safe and effective exercise programs with post-rehab clients as a personal trainer for 10 years at Slim Gyms and now applies his knowledge as a Medical Exercise Specialist. With knowledge of over 60 conditions and over 10 years of experience training clients aged 35 years or more, HalMET has the ability to look at exercise from the point of view of the health professional. By drawing on our knowledge of medical conditions and personal training, we help clients manage their conditions safely. Upon referral from health professionals, the client’s medical and lifestyle history will be assessed in their first visit. Exercise and functional fitness assessments will follow in a second session to determine whether the client is ready for exercise. If red flags, such as numbness and tingling, for example, are determined the client will receive an assessment report and asked to see a health professional with concerns. When the client is cleared to exercise, a 6-8 week individual protocol based exercise program plan will be developed and sent to the health professional for review prior to commencing the program. After approval, the client will follow a program with targeted outcomes with the final goal to be able to train on their own. Outcomes are measured through improvements in their conditions like increased stability, range of motion, strength, and overall energy. Progress reports will be sent to the client’s referring medical professional to update the management progress and to receive any necessary adjustments to ensure continued progress in their condition. With the completion of targeted outcomes, the client will graduate from MET and can then receive personal training services from HalMET staff or work on their own.
