Carmen Hutt Movement Carmen has been practicing yoga on a daily basis for the past 15 years.

Her initial intrigue came after years of long distance running, looking for something softer, and on her initial trip to India in 2002 she tried yoga and was hooked. She took her initial ashtanga yoga teacher training (200 hr) with Brian Cooper in Edinburgh, Scotland, then spent long periods of time in India with Lino Miele ( Italy) and Rolf and Marcy Naukojat ( Goa). She has also completed week long intensives with David Williams, David Swenson, Dharma Mittra, Ana Forrest, and Shiva Rea. She has since completed her advanced yoga teacher training ( 2015) and therapeutics with Hart Lazer ( Yoga Montreal), Pelvic Floor yoga teacher certification with Leslie Howard ( California), is a Functional Range Mobility Specialist ( FRC), and has most recently delved into the world of STOTT Pilates, having certified in Pilates Mat, Reformer, and Total Barre.

I’ve been teaching movement for a long time—nearly 20 years of yoga before Pilates.

Working with people across many roles and places, I feel really fortunate to have met all kinds of individuals.

Each one has shaped how I show up, always aiming to make things just a little better.

I love creating connection—laughing and learning together. That’s what I build in my studio.

I teach from what I believe, and I let that evolve as I grow.

I’m not for everyone, and I make mistakes.

That’s human. I just keep growing.

As I turn this reel out I think about this šŸ and twist . They are and cause you to really think about what is working to make the moves happen …

-don’t just drop the pelvis - squeeze your gluts
- don’t sag into your shoulders - really push away
- try to get that extension from tail to head and reverse
- & that TWIST can feel like your rib cage wants to explode ! 🤯

Even stepping up onto the foot bar from the floor can be a challenge and to set your feet up .

Sometimes advanced moves should be left for those that have an idea of biomechanically what is happening in the body & how to create it , not just how to make the shape . What other exercises are in this one move to get you to this stage ?

Think critically -& question it all .

Often times people do not realise that Pilates is more than the reformer . Or the mat!

Take this split stability chair for example . Like what the heck is it and how do you actually use and why ?

First thing to say : it is tough - look at that small base to sit on , lie on , roll on … and the pedals - all springs on and it it tricky to move , too little springs and you are banging away ! Finding the support you need to perform a movement is very individual . And the. Split the pedals so just one side is doing the work … phew !

Did you know I teach a Mixed equipment class that uses these and also tower units. It can be a large learning curve from lying on a reformer bed but really starts to bring movements together in different planes , positions and requiring the firing of different muscles ! It is a great challenge !

The studio is growing !

TBH I never anticipated being in this place but it seems to just have happened over an expanse of years .

I purchased my first reformer in 2010 ( from SEARS!) I had no idea how to use it or really what Pilates was .

Fast šŸ’Ø forward 16 years and I now am ingrained in Pilates - having become fully certified in all contemporary equipment , having been teaching for 6 years ( mat first , the one to one on reformer), to now having a five bed studio with stability chairs and towers .

My offerings / classes are still small and not huge in number (as I am a FT mom of 3) but I am having fun 🤩 I ā¤ļø the teaching , the learning I am getting from students and mentors , my wonderful community I have created. I love ā¤ļø seeing my clients laugh , work hard and feel their results.

Teaching a twist on the reformer can be so tough ! I have to say this is a movement that takes clients a long time to get . Not throwing their shoulders into it , not twisting their pelvis .

The use of the ball at the chest is such a helpful tool . Pulling it tight into the upper chest , putting the strap in front and twisting. It helps to keep the spine from shearing or using the shoulders to push the strap .
You really want to feel those side bodies doing the work !

****try twisting first with just the ball at the chest . This I itself can highlight how the centre assists to move the upper torso around .

Always watch for shoulders doing the motion not the torso .

Try it with your students !

True confessions ….

I know how those teeny movements can feel like šŸ”„ šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

When I say add a spring it may be tougher …. But we are on this journey for the long game šŸ›Ÿ & remember dropping a spring is not necessarily make it easier !

Sometimes I forget where I am in my count…. Or maybe I do that on purpose to get you to do more or to slow🐢down.

There are many ways to WIN šŸ„‡ when we do this Pilates practice !

Our Story

Carmen has been an impassioned yoga practitioner, student and teacher for close to 18 years.

Her initial intrigue came after years of long distance running, looking for something softer, and on her initial trip to India in 2002 she tried yoga and was hooked. She took her initial ashtanga yoga teacher training (200 hr) with Brian Cooper in Edinburgh, Scotland, then spent long periods of time in India with Lino Miele ( Italy) and Rolf and Marcy Naukojat ( Goa). She has also completed week long intensives with David Williams, David Swenson, Dharma Mittra, Ana Forrest, and Shiva Rea. Since 2010 her primary teacher has been Hart Lazer ( United Yoga Montreal), completing her advanced yoga teacher training ( 2015) and therapeutics. She has also completed Pelvic Floor yoga teacher training and certification with Leslie Howard ( California), and currently the only yoga certified teacher in Canada.

Carmen is also avidly inspired by the works of Katy Bowman ( Nutritious Movement), Jules Mitchell (Biomechanist), Julie Wiebe ( Pelvic floor physio), and all things 'movement' related. She is certified as a Functional Mobility Specialist.

Carmen has also completed her STOTT Pilates Mat Certification , and is excited to offer this to her students. Carmen is a licensed Occupational Therapist She presently teaches out of her home studio in St Margarets Bay, Carmen Hutt Yoga.
