June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the rich history, diverse cultures, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.
We are grateful to live, learn, and work in Kjipuktuk, on the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples. These sovereign Nations hold inherent rights as the original peoples of these lands, and we all carry collective responsibilities under the Peace and Friendship Treaties. Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms Aboriginal and Treaty rights in Canada.
Our team is committed to providing compassionate, judgment-free first aid and mental health first aid to everyone. The DMCRT recognizes that healthcare, including mental health support, must be rooted in respect, cultural safety, and ongoing learning. We’re committed to fostering inclusive spaces and listening deeply to Indigenous voices on campus and beyond.
This month and always, we encourage reflection, education, and action.
