🌟 Spring 2026 CRTP Awards – Funding Opportunity for Cancer Research Trainees!

Are you a graduate student, PhD candidate, or postdoctoral fellow enrolled in the CRTP? BHCRI is now accepting Intent to Apply submissions for the Spring 2026 CRTP Awards.

Award Value: $17,500 CAD
Tenable: September 2026 – September 2027

A limited number of awards will be offered to outstanding applicants whose graduate research focuses on cancer.

Deadline to Submit Intent to Apply: Friday, March 27, 2026 by 5:00 PM ADT

BHCRI is happy to announce that we are now accepting abstract submissions for poster and/or platform presentations at the upcoming 2026 Cancer Research Conference.

This is a great opportunity for CRTP trainees to showcase their work, connect with peers, and contribute to important conversations in cancer research. We look forward to highlighting innovative research and welcoming a diverse range of submissions.

🎓 Calling All Undergraduate and Select First- and Second-Year Medical Students in Atlantic Canada! 🧬

The BHCRI Summer Studentships are back for 2026! If you’re interested in cancer research, this is your chance to gain hands-on experience and work with top researchers in the field.

💰 Awards: $5,000 - $7,500 CAD
📅 Duration: 14 weeks, starting after April 1, 2026
📍 Where: Recognized institutions in Atlantic Canada

Eligibility:

Open to undergraduate students enrolled at recognized institutions in Atlantic Canada conducting cancer-related research projects. This includes those who will begin a graduate program the following September. ** New! The PEJK Real Estate Thyroid Cancer Clinical Research Summer Studentship is open to Atlantic Canadian first- and second-year medical students conducting thyroid cancer clinical research.

💗 We’re grateful to the East Hants Penguins Jr B Hockey Club for choosing to support the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute through their Pink in the Rink jersey auction.

Funds raised from this community initiative will be donated to BHCRI to help advance cancer research in Atlantic Canada.

🏒 Bidding closes Thursday at 10pm, with winners announced at Friday’s home game.

🏃‍♂️ BHCRI is proud to support the Terry Fox Run and celebrate personal milestones along the way!

We are thrilled to share that Don Desserud, PhD, Professor and Department Chair at UPEI, and a valued member of BHCRI's Management Advisory Council, has successfully completed the 13 km Confederation Bridge route during the Terry Fox Run on September 21 — his birthday!

Don’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of perseverance. Almost 10 years after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2015, Don took on this incredible challenge as part of the 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. This year, he ran the iconic bridge route from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island, running the first 8 km, taking a short walking break to enjoy the view (and snap a few photos!), then finishing strong with the remaining 5 km.

Don’s words say it all:
"It was great! The event was well-organized, with 10,000 people registered. The mood on the bridge was positive, and I would definitely do it again."

We were proud to feature Don’s story in our August 21 newsletter as he prepared for this challenge. Now, we’re celebrating his remarkable achievement and the spirit of perseverance that drives all of us in the fight to cancel cancer.

A huge congratulations to Don, and to all the BHCRI members and supporters who participated in the Terry Fox Run this year. Whether you're running, walking, or volunteering, your support means the world.

Together, we are stronger. Together, we will cancel cancer.
