Knitting Warmth into a Rainy October Day 🍃
Hearthside is where I can be found these days, busy hands and an ever growing pile of knits. It's been too long since I've created in this way, intentional stitches, woven stories, warmth and honour of tradition and skill passed down from hands before mine.
When I look at my hands I see all the women before me, my mothers strong but gentle hands, my aunts swift fingers carefully throwing stitches and my grandmothers crooked fingers shaped to her tools of craft.
Rainy days spent next to a fire listening to raindrops have become a favourite. Quite music for the soul, ticking of metal heating and soft taps of droplets on this old house, a cozy comfort.
Handcraft is the backbone of Hillside Acre, from textiles to dirt, these hands create all that they can.
I am looking forward to the upcoming market at where I will have a variety of handmade knits and a small selection of a few favourite herbal goods. From my hands to yours ♡ November 22&23

🍂The front yard glows golden like sunrays on hot summers day. The breeze is just right for kite flying and laundry drying. Harvests that were not reaped will serve the wildlife through the season, for every harvest some must be left. It's timefor root medicine, digging deep for Dandelion, Burdock and Mallow.
This weather has me wondering if winter will be harsh, the berries were plenty, the rosehips were large, medicines grew triple fold for fevers, coughs and sore throats as well medicines for liver!
This extra time before fall rains and winters blanket mean a little more time to prepare and for that I'm thankful. Mother Nature knows what she is doing even if humans interfere!

It was a bountiful season for yarrow 🍃 Have you been gathering any? If so this is what yours should look like dried. All too often I see brown, dull looking herbs not the vibrant colours that can be preserved when attention and care are taken. Learning how to preserve your harvests for later use is so important. From drying times to methods taking time to learn this important step will make every sip or tea or dap or salves worth it!
Keeping in mind some plants like calendula or clover tend to hold moisture deep within and mold can happen very easily, I've had it happen, it's such a defeating feeling when you have to toss a harvest out BUT it's also an important learning lesson in your herbal journey.
What herbs do you have drying now?
In my dehydrator I have the last of the spearmint, a few clover, apple slices, sage, lavender and calendula.

One Stitch At A Time

Join together, baste, embroider, spruce up, garnish, and cramp are words found to describe a STITCH, funny things words are just one can have so many meanings, it can mean something beautifully and artfully put together or a pain in the neck, quite literally, especially if you do not take a time out to stretch, grab a cup of coffee and relax for a few minutes. It is so easy to get completely wrapped in what you are doing you forget to take care of yourself and if it applies your creative business. Which is something I have taken most of the last couple of months to do, a re-evaluation of where I want to be with my stitches, planning my gardens, researching creative techniques and learning new skills not just to help with the actual stitching side of things but with the creative process you don’t see, the business side of business and learning how to put all of it together, to spruce it up and add some garnish if you please :)

I don’t usually write for the masses, as my many journals will tell you, so please bear with me as I do. Amongst the words above used to describe stitches are the oh so relevant ones that give a more personal meaning to Angela’s Stitches and what I want to produce from my works. I’ll take you with me on GATHERING adventures and introducing you to as many beautiful people and shops who EMBROIDER our wonderful creative world with their arts as possible. For it’s in this community of support we truly grow together creating a thread and stitch that will last a lifetime.

You may also find everyday or not so everyday GARNISH in the form of quotes or random tidbits of information that may or may not be of use to you but I find interesting, like this lovely word...
