Places of Enduring Memory: 5 Cemeteries That Inspire

Cemeteries around the world are often open-air museums—places of peace, history, and stunning artistry that honor the lives lived. They remind us that a memorial can be a beautiful, lasting tribute.

Here are 5 famous cemeteries that inspire contemplation and connection:

Père Lachaise (Paris, France): Known for its elaborate mausoleums and the resting places of artists like Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison, it is a UNESCO site that showcases funerary art.

La Recoleta (Buenos Aires, Argentina): A city of the departed, famous for its opulent architecture and the tomb of Eva PerĂłn (Evita).

Highgate Cemetery (London, England): A Victorian masterpiece of Gothic tombs and twisting pathways, evoking a sense of tranquil, wild beauty.

Okunoin Cemetery (Mount Koya, Japan): Japan’s largest and most sacred cemetery, known for its serene, moss-covered paths through ancient cedar forest.

Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia, USA): A powerful symbol of honor and sacrifice, known for its pristine rows of white headstones and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

At McCaw Funeral Service, we draw inspiration from the lasting legacy of these places to help Lloydminster families create meaningful, personalized tributes that stand the test of time.

As a family we are saddened to announce the passing of Jack Robert Forsyth on November 16, 2025, at Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre in Lloydminster, AB at the age of 81.

Jack grew up in Spruce Lake, SK farming with his Dad and Mom. When the family sold the farm in the 70s, they moved to Lloydminster where Jack’s parents, Oliver and Laura, along with Jack worked at the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment. Jack was so proud to be “in service”. When his parents passed, he moved into Dr. Hemstock where he lived for 20+ years becoming the resident favourite, making many friends and keeping everyone laughing with a wise crack. Needing more care, Jack moved into Dr. Cooke in the Fall of 2022 where again, he was loved by staff and residents - his room the gathering place for watching hockey and visiting.

Simply put … Jack was a character. He was loved wherever he landed and made the best of any situation he found himself in. Never a complainer, Jack faced his challenges with courage, bravery and laughter. He had a very large community of friends and Jack’s treasures were his people.

Jack’s Funeral Service will be conducted from McCaw Funeral Chapel in Lloydminster on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 11:00 am.

Donations in memory of Jack may be made to donor’s charity of choice.
