Hey guys, I got something to talk about here to hopefully give you some food for thought! :)
Horses are no different then humans in the therapy end of it. They need time off after a session no different then humans. When your chiropractor and massage therapist finish with you, they will always tell you 'Now don't do anything strenuous for a few days". Because if you do, you are undoing the work they have done and causing damage to your muscles again.
So what I've noticed with higher performance horses, is that their owners want them to feel better and get them the treatment they need, but they are not willing to follow through with the after care. And the aftercare is often equally as important as the treatment itself.
They are not willing to give their horses the required amount of days off so that their body might get the full effects of the treatment.
When a horse is sore and out for a while, just like people, their body learns how to work with this ouchie spot, it learns how to work around it and begins to regard this as normal, bless them. They would do whatever they could to make us happy.
After a session though, both a massaging and adjusting one, their body is now foreign again. They need to time for their bodies to re learn how to work now that it is properly aligned. Getting back to work so soon ruins the session and undoes any progress your horse and i are able to make. Because typically it takes more then one session, and upkeep, to make a difference.
The nice thing is that it's usually only the first two sessions where they require any length of time off. After that, their bodies become used to the treatment and I can do a massage the day of an event. And it would only take a few days with an adjusting before an event to recover. So it's not an everytime kind of thing.
So just a little food for thought; be willing to take your therapist seriously when they say your horse needs a certain amount of days off. And be willing to keep up with the aftercare to help them out :)
thanks guys! I hope you're all having a fabulous day!
