September often brings big changes such as new or return to routines, back-to-school energy, and the shift into fall. It’s normal to feel both excited and overwhelmed during this transition.

The good news? Small, gentle steps can make a big difference.

Here are 4 ways to ease the September Shift:
~ Keep routines gentle
~ Make space for small joys
~ Feel your feelings
~ Ask for support

You don’t have to wait for a crisis to go to therapy. Therapy isn’t just for rock bottom or when everything is falling apart. Here are some examples of why you might want to seek support:
- You want to develop tools for self-care & resilience
- You want to feel more like yourself
- You’re feeling stuck or unmotivated
- You want to improve your communication skills
- You want to increase self-compassion & reduce self-criticism
- You want to better understand yourself & your emotions
- You are navigating change, loss or uncertainty
- You want to gain an understanding of your patterns

Therapy is a space where you don’t have to perform, explain, or have all the answers. It’s where you get to exhale and be met with compassion, curiosity, and support.

▫ No crisis required. Just you, as you are.
▫ In-person therapy in Midland, ON, or virtual sessions across Ontario & Nova Scotia

Summer Screen Time: Finding the Sweet Spot!

School’s out, routines shift, and let’s be honest, this means screen time often goes up.

This is not always a bad thing. Screens can give parents a breather and kids a way to connect, learn, or relax. But too much screen time can impact sleep, mood, and social development; especially when it replaces movement, face-to-face connection, or creative play.

Research tells us that too much screen time can have negative impacts on physical and mental health. The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) recommend the following:
- Children 2 and under - no screen time
- Children aged 2 to 4: less than one hour a day of screen time per day
- Children and youth aged 5 to 17: maximum of two hours a day of recreational screen time - watching television, messaging friends or playing computer games

So what can parents do? Here are some tips to shift the screen time use in your home:

1) Start with small shifts
Try reducing screen time by just 30 minutes a day. Mealtimes and the hour before bed are great places to start.

2) Make it a shared experience
Watch or play together when you can, it turns screen time into connection time, and gives you insight into what your child is thinking or learning.

3) Choose quality over quantity
Look for shows, games, or apps that are age-appropriate, calming, and educational. Bonus points if they spark curiosity or conversation!

4) Mix in movement and fresh air
Balance screen time with physical activity, think nature walks, sprinkler fun, or a family dance party. Screens down, bodies moving!

5) Create screen-free spaces
Keep devices out of bedrooms and away from the dinner table. It helps protect sleep and makes room for real-life connection.

Because someone seems to be managing doesn’t mean things aren’t heavy. We all carry things others can’t see—grief, worry, burnout, overwhelm.

If you’ve been holding onto a lot lately, you are not alone. Therapy can be a space to set some of it down and just breathe.

If that kind of support sounds helpful, I’m here.
