As you may know, Upward Dog yoga pose is relatively easy, and you may have done it many times. But it has surprising and powerful benefits. The benefits are summarised in the drawing with this post. It’s from the book by the late Dr Shah. Dr Shah was a medical doctor, and Iyengar yoga teacher, who did extensive training with Mr BKS Iyengar. In his book, “Therapeutic Yoga”, Dr Shah says Upward Dog does all this.
1. Tones complete spine and heart. (See light brown line in diagram, and letter H).
2. Expands chest and lungs. (See letter L in diagram).
3. Massages abdominal and pelvic organs. (See letter A and P in diagram).
4. Tones thyroid, adrenals, islets of Langerhans, and go**ds (male & female). (See the letters T, AD, I and G in the diagram.)
5. Strengthens all the joints (blue circles), and muscles (dark brown lines), of upper and lower extremities
6. Reduces fat around the abdomen, arms and legs. (See the yellow lines in the diagram).
FEEL BETTER, LOOK BETTER, & PERFORM BETTER
Even though I (Chris Lalor) have been doing Up Dog for decades, I’m always surprised by how much this yoga asana does.
And every other pose also has a large range of benefits.
It’s no wonder they make you feel better, look better, perform better, and much more.
If you don’t do yoga, getting all these sorts of benefits are just another excellent reason for starting or re-starting yoga.
As Dr Shah’s diagram demonstrates, yoga does so many things that nothing else can do, or it does them better.
So even if you’re doing some walking, running, cycling, gym or Pilates, then I suggest you also include sufficient yoga in your weekly activities. 😍😃🧘🧘
